Theater Prop Master (4 Yr Degree Required)

Position Overview

The Prop Master is responsible for overseeing all aspects of theatrical properties, including acquisition, maintenance, design, and fabrications. This role requires creative problem-solving, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with various production departments. Please do not apply if you do not have a 4 year degree in Theater or related experience of 10 years.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the props department in the design, construction, modification, acquisition of all props, and fabrications.
• Create and manage props budgets, maintaining detailed records of expenses and inventory
• Source materials and props through purchasing or fabricating
• Coordinate with scenic designers and management to ensure props meet production design requirements
• Supervise and train warehouse/scene shop staff
• Maintain organized storage systems for props inventory
• Ensure all props meet safety requirements and regulations
• Attend production meetings
• Coordinate prop transitions and placement during installs
• Manage prop maintenance, repairs, and post-event strike processes

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Technical Theater, Props Design, or related field, or equivalent work with 10 years minimum of experience
• Minimum 10 years of experience in theatrical props management
• Demonstrated knowledge of prop construction techniques and materials
• Proficiency in woodworking, upholstery, painting, and basic fabrication
• Experience with power tools and workshop equipment
• Strong project management and organizational skills
• Valid driver's license and ability to lift 50 -75 pounds

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with CAD software and digital design tools
• Experience with specialized prop effects
• Background in scenic design or technical direction
• Experience managing budgets and staff
• Driving of box truck

Technical Skills

• Proficiency in prop construction and modification techniques
• Knowledge of materials including wood, metals, plastics, foam, and fabrics
• Understanding of safety protocols and proper tool usage
• Basic sewing and upholstery skills
• Familiarity with theatrical lighting and how it affects prop appearance

Soft Skills

• Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities

• Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines

Working Conditions

• Must be able to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $65,000.00 - $70,000.00 per year
