Position Overview
The Prop Master is responsible for overseeing all aspects of theatrical properties, including acquisition, maintenance, design, and fabrications. This role requires creative problem-solving, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with various production departments. Key Responsibilities
- Lead the props department in the design, construction, modification, acquisition of all props, and fabrications.
- Create and manage props budgets, maintaining detailed records of expenses and inventory
- Source materials and props through purchasing or fabricating
- Coordinate with scenic designers and management to ensure props meet production design requirements
- Supervise and train warehouse/scene shop staff
- Maintain organized storage systems for props inventory
- Ensure all props meet safety requirements and regulations
- Attend production meetings
- Coordinate prop transitions and placement during installs
- Manage prop maintenance, repairs, and post-event strike processes
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Technical Theater, Props Design, or related field, or equivalent work with 10 years minimum of experience
- Minimum 10 years of experience in theatrical props management
- Demonstrated knowledge of prop construction techniques and materials
- Proficiency in woodworking, upholstery, painting, and basic fabrication
- Experience with power tools and workshop equipment
- Strong project management and organizational skills
- Valid driver's license and ability to lift 50 -75 pounds
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with CAD software and digital design tools
- Experience with specialized prop effects
- Background in scenic design or technical direction
- Experience managing budgets and staff
- Driving of box truck
Technical Skills
- Proficiency in prop construction and modification techniques
