What are the responsibilities and job description for the Scholar Coach - The Journey School position at Ampact?
Position Summary
Students who read have the power to succeed, and we’re on a mission to make sure every student is a strong reader! Join the Total Learning Classroom Initiative of Reading Corps as a Scholar Coach and you’ll spend your days at a local school helping students improve their skills and ignite a love of learning. We’ll train you to deliver proven activities and coach you every step of the way!
How does it work? As part of a “home” classroom, you’ll partner with a teacher to build reading skills and engagement. You’ll also spend part of each day meeting with students individually or in pairs for 20 minutes of reading practice. When your time together is up, you’ll help your student(s) return to their classroom(s) and pick up your next student(s) for tutoring. You’ll repeat until all your students are served.
With the extra attention and support, incredible growth happens. As your students build their skills and confidence, you’ll be there to encourage, celebrate, and cheer them on!

Core Responsibilities
- Be a caring adult who's focused on helping students thrive
- Collaborate with a classroom teacher and provide reading instruction support
- Lead tutoring sessions and follow a schedule
- Track student progress and meet regularly with the school's on-site coach
- Conduct skill assessments and enter student scores into data software
- Commit to your own growth through coaching and training
- Share your experiences with the community
Essential Qualifications
By the time you begin the service with Total Learning Classroom Initiative of Reading Corps, you should be:
- Dependable and have a history of good attendance
- Able to follow instructions and make improvements based on feedback
- Proficient in basic computer skills (like email and navigating online)
- Fluent in English for speaking, reading, and writing
- 18 years of age or older with a high school diploma or equivalent
- A citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident of the United States
- Ability to succesfully complete a background check
Schedule
We are currently hiring for the 2025-26 school year. Positions run August 2025-June 2026.
- 35 Hours per week (less in weeks with holidays or school release days)
- Daytime hours (plus after school programming when applicable)
- Monday-Friday (no weekends)
- Time off on holidays and school release days
Part-time positions are also available at 25 hours per week!
Compensation & Perks Package
Full-time AmeriCorps members receive a paycheck (stipend) every two weeks. Compensation: $20.13 per hour served and additional perks!
