Job Summary:
Amplus Academy, a K-12 charter school located in the SW part of the Las Vegas valley, is looking for our next Middle School Cheer coach. The ideal candidate would be someone with previous coaching experience that is committed to the development of students as both athletes and people. Candidates should be available in the afternoon/ evening hours for practices and games, and on the weekends for competitions.
Middle School Cheer is a competitive cheer team and will participate as a sideline cheer team for some sports games between December - February. The team will practice 4-5 days per week and attend school functions that include, but are not limited to, basketball games, school pep rallies, etc. and participate in 5-7 competitions between the months of December and April. The Middle School Coach will be expected to play a role in the development of our cheer program via camps, clinics, and fundraisers in collaboration with our elementary, junior varsity, and high school coaches. The Middle School Coach will work together with the Head Cheer Coach to set practices, game and competition schedules, and other items related to the Junior High cheer squad.
Amplus Academy has an secondary school population of approximately 1,400 students. Prospective hires must be able to pass a fingerprinting background check and complete all NIAA required training and certifications.
Terms of Employment: The expectation is to attend practices, games, competitions. The season runs from August through June.
Job Status: Part-Time, Temporary, Not Benefit Eligible
Salary: The stipend for this position is $1,500-$2,000 annually, paid in three $500-$600 installments throughout the year
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Supervises the behavior of student athletes in practices, when cheering at games, both home and away, at competitions, and at school functions.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Manage and supervise middle schoool cheer athletic activities, practices, games, and competitions to promote individual growth in athletic skills, teamwork, discipline, respect, and good sportsmanship.
- Use a variety of instructional techniques and media to meet the needs and improve the abilities of student athletes in sideline and competitive cheer.
- Coordinate the development and promotion of the cheer program in conjunction with the Head Coach.
- Participate in organizational meetings for team prospects and encourage potential athletes to participate in the cheer program.
- Work with the Head Coach and other members of school staff to plan and put in place instructional goals and objectives to ensure the overall educational development of student athletes. The Middle School Coach can expect to attend 3-4 games during the Fall season, 4-5 games during the Winter season, and 1-2 games during the Spring season.
- Establish performance criteria for sideline and competitive cheer and evaluate students’ athletic abilities initially and on a regular basis.
- Develop a regular practice schedule and organize practice time to provide both individual and team development.
- Assess cheerleaders’ skills and assign team positions for stunting and routines.
- Plan and choreograph game day stunts, cheers, halftime performances, pep rallies, etc.
- Apply and enforce student discipline during athletic contests, practice sessions, pep rallies, and competitions.
- Encourage sportsmanlike conduct in all phases of athletic participation at all times.
- Take all necessary precautions to protect student-athletes, equipment, and facilities, including protecting students from hazing/bullying.
- Oversee the process of cleaning, repairing, and storing all cheer equipment, including but not limited to cheer mats, signs, and poms.
- Participate in special activities to include banquets, award nights and pep assemblies.
- Follow established procedures in the event of an athlete’s injury.
- Represent Amplus Academy and the cheer program in a professional manner.
- Maintain nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.
- Attend staff development meetings, clinics, and other professional activities to improve coaching performance.
- Perform any other related duties as assigned by the Head Coach or other appropriate administrator.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Comprehensive knowledge of cheerleading is paramount. Extensive knowledge of current coaching techniques/procedures and competitive cheerleading.
- Knowledge of NIAA rules.
- Demonstrated ability to instruct and supervise student-athletes.
- Ability to communicate effectively and professionally in spoken and written word.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to relate to students and to teach them in and out of practice.
- Willing to accept a high level of accountability.
- Applicant should be professionally calm and motivationally intense.
- Should be a progressive thinker but a believer in planning and preparation.
Qualifications, Education and Experience:
- At least 1 year of experience coaching and/or experience participating in sideline and competitive cheer.
- Nevada Substitute Teacher or Teaching License preferred
- Must be CPR/ AED certified, or able to gain certification prior to employment
- Must have NIAA required trainings from NFHS Learn completed, or able to gain certification prior to employment
- Must possess effective coaching techniques and skills.
- Must possess knowledge of the rules, regulations, strategies, and techniques of the sport.
- Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school administrators, governing organizations (NIAA), opponents, staff, parents, and students.
