Speech/ Language Pathologist (SLP) Job Description

Job Summary: 

Under the direction and supervision of the Assistant Principal, the Speech/Language Pathologist (SLP) will facilitate reduction, remediation, or elimination of speech and language impairments which interfere with the individual student’s ability to benefit from the school’s educational program. 

 

The SLP will be expected to adhere to Amplus Academy’s professional standards as well as Nevada Department of Education licensure standards.  Amplus Academy is a classical education charter school located in the southwest area of Las Vegas.  Amplus Academy has two campuses serving Kindergarten- 12th grade students.  

 

Terms of Employment: 10-month per Contract of Employment (180 Day Calendar)

 

Salary:  The compensation for this position is in alignment with the Amplus Governing Board approved Salary Schedule; Salary Schedule based on years’ experience and degree held. Compensation for all positions are determined by the Governing Board and Administration of Amplus Academy. Consideration is given for experience and specialized skills in determining salary.

 

Salary Range: Market rate based on experience, education and licensure

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Supervises the behavior of students in the classroom, on school grounds, and in an office setting

 

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Organize and conduct identification programs for students with potential speech/language difficulties
  • Evaluate speech and language functions
  • Plan the clinical program for students who have been identified as speech/language impaired, speech impaired, and/or students having related disabilities with communication needs (i.e. intellectually disabled, autistic, etc.). 
  • Implement the clinical program
  • Comply with state standards, Amplus policies, and ASHA guidelines in the processes of referral, screening, and placement:
    • Follow Amplus procedures for screening, pre-intervention and/or referring students needing a speech/language evaluation.
    • Complete comprehensive and appropriate evaluations according to state standards, Amplus policies, and ASHA guidelines
    • Provide a complete diagnostic summary report including a summary of evaluation information and educational relevance 
    • Cooperate with the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) Committee, recommending/planning for program services in compliance with State Standards
    • Complete IEP paperwork in a timely manner
    • When appropriate, make referral for further evaluation 
  • Obtain and use diagnostic information:
    • Participate with various teams (e.g., ESS team, RTI team, student support team) in order to provide pre-referral interventions, screening, and/or evaluation referral information
    • Administer appropriate assessments for each area of suspected speech/language impairment
    • Demonstrate understanding and use of the principles of diagnostic evaluation and interpretation
    • Maintain on-going assessment to verify progress toward established goal 
  • Demonstrate program management skills:
    • Maintain communication with faculty regarding the role of the SLP
    • Maintain a physical environment conducive to learning
    • Develop work schedule(s), which will fit the needs of the students, school, and faculty
    • Report to ESS instructional coordinators and assistant principal
  • Implement Intervention Program:
    • Develop and maintain the instructional component of the IEP according to the results of the evaluation and on-going assessment of progress
    • Develop long-range goals and specific objectives
    • Complete daily notes for each student in a timely manner
    • Include methods and materials in planning
    • Document student progress, attendance, etc
    • Use a variety of approaches and materials to address the IEP that are compatible with the student’s age and interest, and abilities
    • Stay abreast of and implement new instructional strategies
    • Attend workshops and in-service training to obtain up-to-date information in the area of speech and language and maintain required certifications and licensure
    • Implement instructional activities in a logical sequence
    • Provide therapeutic intervention with students to enhance student performance
  • Collaborates professionally with administrators, students, staff, parents/guardians, and community representatives
  • Participates in meetings, seminars, and conferences, and serves on committees, as appropriate
  • Comply with and implement related federal and state laws and Amplus policies, regulations, and procedures as related to health services
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Communicate effectively both written and orally
  • Utilize a computer in health-related searches, e-mail communication, data collection and health record, medication, and specialized procedure documentation
  • Demonstrate general knowledge in the fundamental principles, trends, and research in the field of speech/language pathology
  • Maintain and improve professional competence
  • Participates in other job-related duties and activities related to position, as assigned

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Master’s Degree in Communication Disorders/ Speech and Language Pathology
  • Current ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competency/ ASHA certification
  • Current NV State license for Speech-Language Pathology 
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Nevada Department of Education may find appropriate and acceptable

  • Must be able to traverse school facility and lead students to safety in the event of an emergency.

  • Ability to exert up to 25 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects; ability to occasionally restrain or move up to 50-100 pounds if required to intervene during student safety issues.

  • This type of work requires occasional or frequent standing, walking, sitting, bending, or reaching for extended periods of time.

  • This type of work requires occasional or frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling during crisis scenarios such as hard lockdowns, earthquake drills, etc.

  • Sufficient manual dexterity and/or mobility to grasp and/or manipulate objects, operate mechanical equipment, and move about the work area.

  • Ability to operate, activate and use a computer and other office productivity machinery such as a calculator, copy machine and printer.

  • Employees in this classification may be subject to work environments that have exposure to weather or interiors with extremes of heat and/or cold, wet and/or humid conditions, temperature fluctuations, high noise levels, and various work related hazards such as bloodborne pathogens or other potentially infectious materials.
