DEFINITION: Under the supervision of the principal or designee, perform a wide variety of entry-level security services at District high schools, junior high schools and other sites to ensure the safety of persons, project property of various kinds, maintain order, and enforce rules and regulations governing student conduct. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: This is a single classification series. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Duties/essential functions may include, but not be limited to, the following: •Patrol assigned portions of campus and/or parking lot before, during and after school hours, on foot and in campus vehicles. E •Operate a two-way radio and report incidents to district administration and appropriate law enforcement agencies as directed. E •Respond to radio summons from site administration. Maintain a highly visible presence to deter crime and disorderly conduct. E •Respond to emergency situations, and take appropriate action in accordance with established guidelines; provide basic first aid services as necessary. E •Attempt to prevent or break up fights and disturbances; obtain names of those students involved with violating rules and regulations and report violations to administrators. E •Identify and control the presence of non-students on campus. E •Attend extracurricular events, as assigned, such as dances, athletic events, drama productions and other events to maintain order and deter crime. E •Observe student behavior and caution students on the verge of violating rules. Prevent unauthorized students from leaving school. Write referrals to student offenders. Detain and escort students to appropriate administrator. E •Assist in directing emergency evacuations and other activities relating to the safety of individuals. E •Observe and report to the appropriate district administrator and law enforcement agency as directed any damage to school property. E •Perform a variety of routine clerical work involving record keeping, telephone and preparing reports involving student referrals, crimes or incidents. E •Open and close campus gates, lockers and classrooms as needed; assist with maintaining a clean campus; and as needed wit set-up for special events on campus. E •Answer questions and direct visitors. E •Notify appropriate district administrator of suspected illegal activity on campus property, and areas adjacent to schools. E •Enforce school regulations including, but not limited to, smoking, truancy, tardiness and vandalism. E •Assist district administrators, other campus security personnel and law enforcement personnel in investigation and apprehension of persons committing rule or law violations. E •Provide appropriate leadership for students to earn their respect and cooperation in following directions and school rules. E •Identify, correct and/or report safety hazards that may compromise student/staff safety. E •Monitor parking lots for proper parking procedures and traffic flow. E •Assist in the supervision of On Campus Suspension rooms. •Meet with district administrators and site administrators to discuss security matters. E •May operate battery-powered vehicle in the performance of assigned duties. •Physically restrain or detain persons involved in crimes, fights or other acts of violence pending the arrival of local administrator or law enforcement officer. E •Travel to other district sites to assist with security as needed, using personal transportation. E •Perform related duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge Of: Rules, laws and regulations related to maintaining campus control and appropriate student behavior; adolescent behavior; effective practices for maintaining campus control, security and appropriate student behavior; school organization; appropriate provisions of the California Penal Code, Health and Safety Code, Education Code and Motor Vehicle Code; basic first aid, CPR and blood borne pathogens; modern office equipment and procedures; correct English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation; principles of radio voice communications; record keeping techniques; general principles of law enforcement. Ability To: Learn rules, regulations, policies, and procedures; learn to recognize illegal and contraband weapons and substances; pursue, apprehend, and constrain persons; maintain confidentiality, remember facts, information and people; effectively communicate orally and in writing in English; analyze situations, exercise sound judgment, and adopt effective courses of action; learn the operation of communication devices and other job-related equipment; understand and carry out oral and written directions in English; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; perform duties involving occasional running and climbing and considerable walking; perform duties involving prolonged exposure to weather conditions; maintain records and prepare reports; perform routine clerical work; provide basic first aid and CPR; direct traffic; oversee the activities of students on and adjacent to campus property; facilitate communications between students, employees, district officials and staff to enhance understanding and promote a secure environment; observe situations and accurately determine effective courses of action; act quickly and with appropriate judgment; legally and safely operate a personal vehicle to carry out functions between District sites; maintain work pace appropriate to given workload. Education/Training: High school graduation or the equivalent. Experience: Experience working with adolescents is desirable. License/Certification: Possession of valid California Class C or higher driver’s license at time of appointment, and throughout employment in a position in this classification. Proof of current California auto liability insurance at time of appointment, and throughout employment in a position in this classification. Physical Demands and Working Conditions: Environment: Indoor and outdoor environment; classroom environment; community environment; seasonal heat and cold or adverse weather conditions; exposure to fumes, dust, odors, oil/grease, gases consistent with a crowded parking lot; exposure to stressful and hectic situations; subject to possible fights and confrontations. Physical Demands: Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a two-way radio and a computer keyboard; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; walking or standing for extended periods of time; running or walking quickly to respond to emergency situations or apprehend juvenile offenders; hearing and speaking to exchange information; bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching or crawl to observe and /or assist students; specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus; seeing to monitor students; lifting, carrying, and pushing objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
