Job Description:
AMA is seeking motivated and detail-oriented risk assessment Summer Intern to join our team in Moffett Field, CA supporting NASA on the Aircraft Systems and Spaceflight Engineering Support Services (ASSESS) contract at NASA Ames Research Center (ARC). Work will be in support of the Asteroid Threat Assessment Project (ATAP) at the NASA Advanced Supercomputing (NAS) Division NASA ARC. Internship would be for approximately 10 weeks over the summer of 2025.
About the Projects:
This summer internship project would support development and analysis work for the ATAP Probabilistic Asteroid Impact risk (PAIR) assessment model and/or asteroid entry Fragment-Cloud Model (FCM), which incorporate modeling components in Python, C and Matlab.
Pay for this position is $29.50/hr -$33.50/hr, depending on education.
Responsibilities:
- Investigate sensitivities of asteroid impact risk assessment results to asteroid strength and breakup properties, model sampling and convergence, or damage modeling simplifications.
- Implement modeling and analysis components in Python and/or Matlab.
- Communicate progress of activity to project leads and brief research to other project engineers as required
- Final project deliverables will include a presentation and report on work completed at the end of the summer.
Desired Skills:
- Programming and data analysis experience with Python, Matlab, and or C .
- Understanding of (or relevant coursework in) statistical analysis, probabilistic risk assessment, hazard assessment, material response, aerodynamics, numerical modeling, asteroids, or data visualization would be highly beneficial.
Required Qualifications:
- Currently pursuing a degree (M.S or PhD) in a physical sciences, engineering, math, or computing discipline, such as physics or astronomy; structural, mechanical, civil or aerospace engineering; statistics, applied mathematics, or computer science.
- Solid programming and data analysis experience in Python and Matlab or R.
- Self-motivated and able to work effectively both independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
This position requires U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Residency.
