Job Description:
AMA is currently accepting applications for a short term (10-week) on-site summer position associated with Entry Systems work conducted at NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View, CA. Work will be in support of the Entry Systems and Vehicle Development Branch (TSS), part of the Entry Systems and Technology Division at NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View, CA.
The successful candidate will play an important role in an area of research related to Guidance, Navigation, and Control for the Flight Mechanics Technical Discipline Team, participating in a guidance fly-off by developing and running convex optimization algorithms or indirect methods for powered descent. The successful candidate will also play an important role in improving upon the functionality of an existing CT scan analysis tool for post-flight material inspection. Preferred candidates will have experience in analyzing thermal protection system CT scan data, trajectory modeling, flight mechanics, and 6DOF guidance/navigation/control.
The pay rate for this position will be $29.50-$33.50 per hour and is commensurate with experience and education.
Responsibilities:
Responsibilities will vary based on the project area assigned to the candidate. Responsibilities will include:
- Performing GN&C analysis on various vehicle reaction control system configurations
- Developing CT scan analysis tool for thermal protection system feature identification
- Regular reporting (verbal and/or written) to mentor and the project development team on progress of project
- Present final results at completion of project
Requirements:
- Progress toward a degree (undergraduate or graduate) in technical areas of relevance to entry systems is required.
- Candidates pursuing a PhD or MS in Engineering or Math in a relevant discipline, such as Aerospace Engineering or Mechanical Engineering, are highly preferred.
- Experience with Guidance, Navigation, and Control of Atmospheric Entry Vehicles is required.
- Experience with engineering computer programming languages such as MATLAB or Python is required.
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills are required.
- US citizenship or permanent US residency is a requirement for this position.
- Ability for on-site presence at NASA Ames Research Center is required
