Job Description:
AMA seeks to hire a Research Scientist to support the NASA Disasters Program Office of the Disaster Response Coordination System (DRCS). The DRCS is a NASA wide approach to leveraging the best of NASA’s science expertise and technology to support operational disaster response organizations domestically and internationally. To fully implement the vision for the DRCS, the Disasters Program Office at Langley will collaborate closely with staff at Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC), Ames Research Center (ARC), Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC), Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), and the Johnson Spaceflight Center (JSC).This is a full-time position supporting the DRCS in Hampton, Virginia or nearby location as part of the Research, Science, and Engineering Services (RSES) contract.
Responsibilities:
- Work with Disasters Program Geospatial Lead to manage portal product guide, establish schedules for record retention and archiving of data
- Develop products, applications, and tools for the Disasters Portal
- Curate data and product integration into the portal before, during, and after disaster activation
- Provide value-added and other innovative geospatial analysis of products for different user needs
- Manage and ensure continuity of access to the portal for end users
- Screen disaster activation-based products and provide quality checks before provision to portal
- Assess and implement technology requirements necessary to enable the DRCS Program Office to track and respond to multiple disaster events simultaneously, coordinating and integrating data and derived products from across the system, to include multiple NASA Centers
- Provide dayshift support to conduct spatial analyses required by NASA to support disaster response and conduct necessary activity reporting through established NASA and FEMA procedures.
- Work with the FEMA National Response Coordination Center (NRCC) and support the Response Geospatial Office with response activities during major NRCC activations.
- Represent the DRCS and present research findings at meetings and conferences.
- Travel to support meetings, conferences, site visits, and disaster activations.
Requirements:
- Master's Degree in Earth Science or related field with at least 5 years of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Expertise with ArcGIS, Story Maps, and ArcGIS Web Tools
- Expertise with Geospatial Enablement and Big Data Analytics
- Expertise with Object Oriented Programming and Python GIS tools
- Ability to coordinate with subject matter experts and stakeholders
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Resilient and good under pressure
- Must be a US person.
