Job Description:
Analytical Mechanics Associates (AMA) is currently accepting applications for a motivated and intellectually curious research intern with strong background in category theory and advanced mathematics, to help shape the future of Urban Air Mobility (UAM) and next-generation transportation systems. The role will focus on applying high-level mathematical structures to model, formalize, and optimize complex systems in UAM through the modeling of its architecture.
This internship will be held at NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC) in Hampton, VA beginning Summer 2025. AMA is seeking applicants with entrepreneurial spirit who are organized and willing to accept responsibility. The selected applicant will contribute to the research efforts of the Crew Systems and Aviation Operations Branch and the LaRC Air Mobility Pathfinders (AMP) Team.
The ideal candidate will have specialized knowledge in category theory, boolean profunctors, and an ability to explain complex mathematical concepts to experts across multiple domains. Intern should be pursuing or have recently attained a graduate degree in mathematics, preferably PhD.

This is a fully remote internship. US Citizenship or permanent resident status is required.
Requirements:
Current enrollment or completion of a graduate degree program in Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field.
Experience in or exposure to category theory with specialized knowledge of boolean profunctors and applications of category theory to systems engineering.
Technical communication experience (written and oral) with the ability to transmit complex technical concepts to a diverse team.
Self-starter attitude and strong organizational skills.
Desired Qualifications:
Experience with or exposure to aviation operations and current research areas in UAM operations in the National Airspace System (NAS)
Project experience working with interdisciplinary teams and experience contributing to a published proposal, research/professional scientific article, paper, or conference presentation.
Salary range is $20.59- 24.90/hr.
