Description
AS&M has an exciting opportunity for a Materials Scientist to join the team in Hampton, Virginia, supporting the Maintenance Services group for the Center Maintenance, Operations, and Engineering (CMOE) contract at NASA Langley Research Center.
Responsibilities
Support the development of computational materials techniques for simulating and predicting phase and microstructure evolution during post-process heat treatment focused on aerospace alloys, utilizing programming languages such as Python, C , and MATLAB.
Collaborate with the Transformational Tools and Technologies (TTT) Project to achieve project objectives.
Develop computational methodologies and techniques for simulating the microstructure evolution, phase evolution, recrystallization, and grain coarsening during the additive manufacturing process and during the heat treatment of additively manufactured part.
Provide metallurgical expertise on the phase transformation behaviors of aerospace alloys, including but not limited to nickel and titanium alloys, in the context of powder bed fusion additive manufacturing process.
Support the calibration and validation of additive manufacturing models using experimental data, which may include techniques such as scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, electron backscatter diffraction, micro-hardness testing, and optical microscopy.
Support the development of and utilize the results of thermal and thermal-fluid processing models of the additive manufacturing process and the heat treatment process.
Interface with, and leverage experimental data produced by external grantees and partners as needed by the project.
Publish and present on the state-of-the-art of all tasks detailed above.
Develop a Software Management Plan for the Class E software listed above in accordance with NASA software engineering requirements.
Interface with other researchers to generally support the development of new techniques for next-generation qualification & certification of additively manufactured aerospace components.
Attend all meetings as required:
  • Branch, Directorate, and Center-level All-Hands meetings
  • Project meetings
  • External grantee meetings as needed by the project
  • Small team/working group meetings as needed by the project
This position is remote work except for travel for as-needed quarterly site visits for technical meetings and two scientific conferences.
Qualifications
Here’s what you’ll need:
Proof of U.S. Citizenship or US Permanent Residency may be required for this position.Must be able to complete a U.S. government background investigation.
Requisition Qualifications
Requires a Post-doctorate with a PhD in Materials Sciences and Engineering.
Excellent communication, negotiation and coordination skills, and strong customer service attitude.
Experience fostering a collaborative team environment.
Must be able to organize and prioritize tasks in order to meet deadlines and schedules with limited supervision.
Ability to prepare written documents/presentations and to verbally present at various meetings.
Must be willing to travel for quarterly site visits and two conferences.
Attendance
Regular attendance in accordance with established work schedule is critical. Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements.
