Role Description
The Director, Forming Operations will report to the Vice President of Manufacturing and be responsible to manage and administrate all Forming departmental function needs for operation. Responsibilities will include coaching, mentoring, managing supervisors, hourly production employees, and hourly production, management of two to three tank operations, to include reporting production efficiencies, customer service, department maintenance and quality requirements. Success in the position requires the ability to develop, manage and simplify complex work streams, directing salary/union, a mastery in project management, and strong communication / leadership skills.
Core Responsibilities/Competencies
- Team Leadership: Strong influencing skills and focus on building relationship equity in a union environment. Ability to lead individuals/teams through all stages of projects, collaborating across multiple levels, functions and organizations (internal and external).
- Participates in the creation, maintenance, and reporting of operational and budget processes, academic and/or staff FTE, finance, and human resources. Manages budget, financial administration, payroll and other activities. Provides guidance and direction to functional supervisors in the administration of these operations.
- Supervises the work of a department. Recommends hiring of new employees, transfers, terminations, performance management and budget recommendations. Directly supervises 10 FTE plus indirect supervision of additional 90 FTE in department (journey-workers and laborers). Develops job descriptions and assigns work. Formulates performance standards, conducts evaluations and initiates personnel actions.
- Responsible for quality and quantity of work. Supervises glass manufacturing of the 24/7 department. Develops tools and spreadsheets to streamline analytics of key points to drive efficiencies across 10 to 15 production lines.
- Selects, develops, and evaluates personnel to ensure the effective and efficient operation of the function. Researches and formulates criteria for merits and promotions for personnel. Conducts analysis provides justifications and writes cases for promotions. Proposes recruitment and retention strategies.
- Manage systems and procedures to protect departmental assets. Conducts analysis and designs reports to track staffing and financial resources.
- Project Management: Subject matter expert (SME) that applies and improves best practices of project methodologies with minimal guidance on Forming department projects utilizing all department employees. Recognizes interdependencies among deliverables, projects and processes and leverages them to the organization’s benefit.
- Conflict Resolution: Able to facilitate team development of the best ideas / solution options by modeling and driving healthy conflict resolution strategies. Effectively leverages different opinions and experiences to help solve problems and accomplish tasks.
- Risk Management: Anticipates issues and problems, proactively defines risk management measures, and distinguishes controllable vs uncontrollable influences. Provides well thought out countermeasure options that outline clear benefits and consequences when escalating issues and roadblocks.
- Communication: Excellent interpersonal and presentation skills, and the ability to provide project progress insight to senior level management. Skillfully chooses appropriate mediums for communication to maximize awareness and productivity while minimizing resource impact.

- Manage departmental apprenticeship program and provide plans on developmental training needs.
- Responsible for overall departmental budget to include labor and discretionary spending.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze forming process conditions, review current mold equipment state, and make necessary adjustments either in forming process or mold equipment design.
- Demonstrated ability to lead a cross functional team to improve quality, efficiencies, and safety through the primary operations.

Qualifications:
- BS degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Ceramic Engineering or related technical field
- Minimum 8-10 years’ experience in supervising /managing in a high-volume production environment
- Extensive knowledge of plant level safety requirements & standards
- Experience in various forms of production & manufacturing processes, batch mixing of raw materials, continuous smelting of enamels or glass
- Working knowledge of Quality programs
- Good computer skills
- Strong communication, leadership, & organizational skills
- Excellent analytical & problem-solving skills
