Position Summary: Supervise the operation of designated melting furnaces and associated equipment. To provide technical leadership to the Melting Department to improve process yields, reduce nonconformities, and reduce product cost. This is accomplished through data analysis, experimental plans, process capability studies, and variability reduction. Provide leadership and management of assigned functional responsibility Glass Composition, Precious Metals and Melting Critical Spares).
What will you do?
- Monitor daily operations ensuring process stability and shift-to-shift operational consistency
- Characterize and optimize daily operations.
- Correlate glass quality and operational problems with process variables
- Provide training, coaching, and assessing in accordance with ISO standards for furnace/forehearth operators and other Melting personnel
- Ensure compliance with all safety and housekeeping guidelines
- Inspect process equipment and ensure problems are identified and addressed in a timely matter
- Maintain and enforce the SOS system for the assigned unit
- Support tank repairs and start-ups
- Cross train between melting units in order to provide vacation, weekend and off-shift coverage
- Determine and institute job change set-ups coordinating with Forming to minimize downtime and cullet at start-up
- Track downtime, cullet, quality, tank efficiency, and refractory wear rate ensuring objectives for each area are met
- Ensure compliance with ISO standards for assigned area
- Ensure all equipment is being properly maintained and back-ups are operational
- Work closely with Forming as required to ensure maximum percentage select
- To drive accountability into the operators and Tank maintenance.
- Develop experimental plans for process improvement
- Uses statistics to analyze process variables
- Standardize process procedures in the department
- Support the Melting Department through weekly on-call and weekend team coverage
- Support project team with tank expansion, tank start-ups, and tank drains
- Oversees Melting Department maintenance projects
- Support Forming Department projects
- Support the Advanced Technology team
- Ability to set and meet project objectives and schedules
Required Qualifications:
- 4 year degree-Chemical Engineering, Ceramic, Glass or other related engineering background
- Knowledge and experience with manufacturing processes and equipment and measurement systems and controls
- Competencies: *Excellent data management and spreadsheet skills; *Team player with outstanding engagement and communication skills; *Can self-direct and prioritize process/project needs
- Experience with high temperature thermal processes preferred (i.e.: Melting, Forming or High Temperature Furnaces)
