About the Team

Under the general supervision of the Program Manager, the Peer Support Specialist provides support and rehabilitation services while serving as an advocate for youth and young adults transitioning to independence. This role is designed for individuals with lived experience as a young adult navigating mental health challenges, housing instability, or substance use recovery. The Peer Support Specialist helps empower youth by sharing their personal experiences, modeling coping strategies, and connecting clients with essential services. The Peer Support Specialist works as a member of a team consisting of various professional disciplines in providing services to clients in accordance to the prescribed form of treatment and maintains behavior and communications which are consistent with Organization mission, goals, and chosen values.

What You’ll Do

  • Act as a role model to persons in recovery to inspire hope, share life experiences and lessons learned as a person in recovery.
  • Model and mentor recovery process and demonstrate coping skills.
  • Identify recovery persons’ abilities, strengths and assess and assist them to recognize and use them. Educate and engage individuals in the Wellness Recovery and Action Plan process as a means to recognize early triggers and signs of relapse, and use of individual coping strategies as an alternative to more restrictive services. Assist individuals in learning self-advocacy skills
  • Work collaterally with the Master’s level Clinician and other team members in establishing the service plan. Gathers treatment related information with respect to the client’s presenting problems; mental status; relevant psychiatric, medical, and developmental history to make decisions regarding diagnosis, treatment objectives, and ongoing service plans.
  • Regularly clean floors, surfaces, and furniture, ensuring a welcoming and sanitary environment in common and program-specific areas.
  • Keep program spaces tidy and restock essential items (e.g., hygiene products, cleaning agents, toiletries) for uninterrupted client access to basic needs.
  • Identify and report maintenance issues, keep storage areas orderly, and follow a weekly cleaning schedule to meet organizational safety and quality standards.
  • Participate in street outreach to connect with clients, provide essential items, and inform them about available services at the facility.

  • Pay Range is $19.23 to $24.89 per hour depending on experience

Qualifications

  • Minimum of high school diploma or GED.
  • Required: Personal life experience in recovery from mental illness, or substance abuse and/or co-occurring disorders
  • Preferred 1-2 years of volunteer experience in the mental health and/or substance abuse fields.
  • Must demonstrate knowledge of systems that affect individuals’ lives, i.e., mental health system, substance abuse system, housing, and others.
  • Must be highly self-motivated and able to work under tight time constraints and under stressful and emotional situations.
  • Must be able to learn and use accepted peer support practices
  • Possess valid Alaska Driver’s License and driving record indicating the absence of: suspension or revocation of license in any state or jurisdiction during the past five years; more than one moving violation during the past year; or accident resulting in personal injury during the past three years for which the operator was cited for violation of motor vehicle code(s).
  • Ability to keep client information confidential.
