ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Summary: Provides care for animals. Maintains the Animal Shelter and provides customer service. This includes the following, as well as other duties that may be assigned.


ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK

  • Adheres to established operational policies and procedures to ensure the efficient and effective operation of the Animal Services Facility. This includes performing basic health assessments on animals, providing treatment such as bathing, application of flea and tick medicine; walking dogs by leash, etc.
  • Cleans kennels and surrounding work areas within the shelter in accordance with proper disease control requirements.
  • Assists with performing required administrative duties such as logging calls, preparing surrender forms, bite reports, etc.
  • Ensures the cleanliness and proper maintenance of the animal services facility and recommends the procurement of maintenance services when necessary.
  • Ensures the humane handling and care of all animals taken in by the animal services facility.
  • Ensures that each animal's nutritional and housing needs are met on a daily basis.
  • Assists the public with the admission and adoption of animals and promotes responsible pet ownership at all times.
  • Assists the public with completing application forms and makes assessment of their ability to adequately care for adopted pets.
  • Observes and evaluates animals for signs of illness and reports symptoms to the appropriate personnel.
  • Interacts with pet owners and the public when dealing with stray or abandoned animals, or animals that have been hurt or have bitten someone.
  • Educates the public on the law and ordinances pertaining to animal ownership and control.
  • Assists with the intake of animals and the day to day showing of the animals.
  • Assists with ensuring a proper inventory of all supplies and equipment required for animal control and facility operations; re-stocks and runs errands when necessary.
  • Performs related duties as required.


NECESSARY REQUIREMENTS OF WORK

Graduated from an accredited high school or GED is preferred. Considerable animal care experience is preferred. Strong organizational, interpersonal, and decision-making skills; dedicated attention to detail; or any equivalent combination of education or experience to provide the following knowledge, ability, and skills:

  • Knowledge of state statutes and regulations regarding care/treatment of animals.
  • Knowledge of the statutes, ordinances, and regulations pertaining to animal control, adoption, and disposal for Anderson County.
  • Knowledge of animals including various breeds and species, temperaments and habits, etc.
  • Knowledge of common diseases occurring in domestic animals and the medications or treatment process to alleviate symptoms and prevent transmission to other animals.
  • Ability to prepare reports and maintain documentation in accordance with existing policies and procedures.
  • Ability to effectively supervise and direct the activities of volunteers assisting at the animal services facility.
  • Skill in the use of animal control equipment.
  • Ability to effectively clean cages and care for animals.
