Job Summary: Performs basic duties to all age patients in the Emergency Department under the guidance and direction of the Registered Nurse.

Job Responsibilities:
- Uses effective communication skills with patients, staff, other departments, physicians, families and visitors.
- Provides age-appropriate and population specific patient care in a safe, skillful, accurate and efficient manner to newborn, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric populations.
- Duties may include but not limited to phlebotomy, transporting patients, obtain vital signs, ekg’s, splinting, catheter placement and other patient care task as assigned.
- Supports patient’s rights and responsibilities, including respect of cultural and religious diversity.
- Maintains the patient’s environment to include appropriate equipment and supplies at all times.
- Demonstrates appropriate use of equipment. Maintains supplies and instruments.
- Assists in maintaining a clean unit. Responsible for cleaning and set up of patient rooms.
- Completes documentation accurately and timely, according to hospital policies and procedures.
- Utilizes chain of command.
- Maintains calm manner during abrupt changes in acuity and/or activity.
- Recognizes own limitations and seeks assistance when necessary.
- Is flexible with scheduling when necessary.
- Reports defective equipment promptly, completing appropriate forms.
Qualifications
Education Requirements and Other Requirements:
Education Level: High school diploma or equivalent required.
Certification/Licensure: BLS required.
Experience Requirements: Patient Care Technician experience in a hospital setting. EMT, EMT-P or CNA experience preferred.
Working Conditions:
Exposure Category I: Tasks that involve exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues. All procedures or other job-related tasks that involve an inherent potential for mucous membrane or skin contact with blood, body fluids, or tissues, or a potential for spills or splashes of them, are Category I tasks. Use of appropriate protective measures is required for every employee engaged in Category I tasks.
