TITLE: Director of TransportationREPORTS TO: Deputy SuperintendentSUPERVISES: Bus Drivers, Bus Aides, and other Transportation PersonnelJOB GOAL: To provide safe, efficient, and reliable transportation services that support the district’s educational mission by ensuring well-maintained vehicles, well-trained personnel, and well-planned routes while maintaining compliance with state and federal transportation regulations.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Develops, administers, and oversees the district’s transportation program, ensuring compliance with district, state, and federal policies, standards, and safety regulations for both instructional and extracurricular activities.Investigates and reports on all accidents and safety violations, ensuring corrective actions and compliance with district and insurance regulations.Develops and maintains efficient bus routes, schedules, and maps using routing software and GPS tracking systems to ensure optimized transportation services while accommodating for changes in enrollment, traffic patterns, or safety concerns.Monitors weather, road conditions, and emergency situations to assist in decisions regarding school delays and closures.Supervises, recruits, trains, and evaluates all transportation personnel, making recommendations for employment, transfer, promotion, and dismissal.Develops and implements in-service training programs for bus drivers and aides, ensuring proficiency in safety procedures, student behavior management, and crisis response.Schedules bus driver certification training and implements and enforces a drug and alcohol testing program for all transportation employees as required by state and federal regulations.Develops and enforces safety policies, including regular bus safety inspections, emergency preparedness drills, and driver training programs.Oversees a bus rider safety training program and implements student conduct guidelines for school buses, maintaining high behavior expectations and ensuring proper discipline procedures in collaboration with school administrators.Coordinates and oversees video surveillance systems, seat belt policies, and specialized safety equipment on all district buses.Works with special education teams to determine transportation needs for special needs students, including route development and the hiring of aides and drivers.Manages the maintenance, repair, and replacement plan for all district-owned pupil transportation vehicles, ensuring a safe and reliable fleet.Coordinates necessary repairs and preventive maintenance schedules for all district vehicles, ensuring compliance with state and federal inspection standards.Prepares and administers the transportation department’s budget, overseeing expenses related to fleet maintenance, fuel, and personnel.Authorizes purchases of necessary transportation supplies and equipment, ensuring cost-effective and compliant acquisitions.Oversees and maintains records for fuel consumption, mileage tracking, and cost-saving strategies to improve operational efficiency.Facilitates clear and effective communication between transportation staff, school administrators, and district leadership.Handles parent and community concerns regarding transportation services, resolving complaints and special transportation requests in a timely and professional manner.Maintains regular contact with school principals, district leaders, law enforcement, and state officials regarding transportation issues.Promotes public awareness of transportation safety guidelines, partnering with local agencies to enhance community engagement in student safety initiatives.Coordinates emergency preparedness efforts for transportation-related incidents, including crisis response, accident procedures, and communication protocols.Reports hazardous road conditions or needed infrastructure improvements to the State Highway Department and county officials.Participates in district emergency planning, ensuring the transportation team is trained in evacuation procedures and crisis response.Engages in ongoing professional development by attending local, state, and national transportation conferences, workshops, and training sessions.Implements innovative technologies such as GPS tracking, fleet management software, and student ridership systems to improve efficiency and safety.Procures, maintains and issues activity buses throughout the district in accordance with Board policy.Issue buses and route assignments to drivers at the beginning of the school year, coordinate transportation for after-school and summer programs, and check in the buses at the end of the school term.Monitors and maintains fleet safety equipment, including video cameras, phones, child safety seats, radios etc.Serves as district contact for the general public, administrators, and staff in all matters related to transportation and works to promote good public relations through professional and ethical execution of job responsibilities.Performs other duties as assigned by the Superintendent.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 210 DaysSALARY: Salary based on district salary scheduleEVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of Administrative and Supervisory Personnel.
