The Role
The Portfolio Finance team helps founders, and their leadership teams rapidly learn the relevant financial concepts for their stage and access the network to the best subject matter experts and peers. Additionally, the team advises portfolio teams on their financial strategy, best in class tools, metrics, reporting, forecast and best practices to scale companies and financial foundations they’re built on. Through these efforts, the team strives to support each portfolio company during its growth journey with their pursuit of financial discipline, infrastructure and knowledge needed for each stage of growth.
The successful candidate will be responsible for creating adaptable finance frameworks and programs for our portfolio companies, including operating model management, budgeting, finance infrastructure setup, and finance team building.
The candidate will also provide counseling and create content on various start-up finance topics, such as cash management, business metrics & modeling, business strategy, accounting, taxes and financial strategy.
The ideal candidate will have prior experience in the finance function at early-stage startups and have grown in responsibility, scope and title as the company has scaled with growth.
This role requires an in-office presence 2-3 days a week in our San Francisco or Menlo Park, CA office.

To Join Our Team, You Should Be Excited To
- Be comfortable working hands-on with our founders and their finance leaders to address and provide best practices guidance on their pressing issues in the strategy, scaling and operations space
- Build an early stage financial best practice program through content, templates, models, artifacts, workshops, recommended best technology and software tools, etc to improve education and awareness these builders need for their companies
- Roll up your sleeves and dig into financial models, investor reporting and board-level materials to provide feedback and improve reporting
- Partner cross-functionally across the portfolio, General Partners and various operating groups within a16z to address the needs of the portfolio
- Maintain relationships with the service providers for “CFO office” of growing startups (bookkeepers, fractional CFOs, insurance, auditors, 409a, tax advisory, etc) and ensure they provide the best service in the market, appropriate for the company stages
- Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, economics or related field
- Minimum 12 years of experience in finance functions with significant experience at early-stage startups building and scaling the finance function, ideally beginning as the first finance leader hired
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, work toward contributing new ideas & solutions, navigate situations with ambiguity, and execute consistently in a dynamic environment, on your own
- Direct experience in building a company’s finance function and its operating model, forecasts and budgets
- Direct knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (”GAAP”) and investor reporting requirements
- Experience with options, RSUs, 409A valuations, cash management & treasury and an understanding of debt and credit facilities
- Excellent communication (both written and verbal) and interpersonal skills
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work cross-functionally across the portfolio, General Partners and various operational groups within a16z
- Proven ability to work independently, manage competing priorities and execute with a repeatable process in a fast past environment
- Ability to context switching and adapt to evolving with the internal and portfolio company needs
- Must be low ego, possess a high level of empathy and have the ability to work with diverse teams
- Experience with Consumer Internet, Fintech and Games business models is a plus
