What are the responsibilities and job description for the Controller position at Andrews & Cole, LLC?
Reporting to the President, the Controller will perform and manage the accounting and financial operations of the firm, including project level and company-wide financial reporting.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Oversee and manage the day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger oversight and maintenance, accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, and cash disbursements for multiple entities. Currently, the Company has four stabilized properties, two active development projects, eight entities currently executing predevelopment work, and one real estate operating company.
- Oversee cash management functions (drawing/repaying lines of credit, ensuring collections of rent remittances from external property managers & payments of debt, etc.).
- Prepare or review monthly bank draw requests and equity capital calls.
- Prepare quarterly cash flow distributions to owners in accordance with each entity’s preferred return calculations.
- Prepare and review the entities’ asset and development management fee.
- Maintain and review real estate development budgets and verify projects are progressing within expected cost budgets.
- Prepare or review annual operating budgets for each entity.
- Analyze operating results compared to budget and report.
- Review monthly GAAP basis and tax basis accounting submitted by the Accounting Manager.
- Produce monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial statements under Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Tax Basis.
- Prepare quarterly reports analyzing asset performance and Company profit/loss for review with senior management.
- Supervise bank reconciliations process.
- Supervise the payroll process including the maintenance of proper employee data for approximately 10-person team.
- Work with the company's outside accountants for the preparation of federal and state income tax returns.
- Oversee the risk management function of planning and coordinating insurance policies.
- Lead year-end tax planning processes and communicate key tax impact to stakeholders
- Lead compliance with accounting and reporting requirements of the various Operating and Loan Agreements. Working with outside counsel to coordinate necessary amendments.
- Upgrade the Company's accounting technology practices to match its volume of projects.
- Oversee the annual audit for one of the stabilized entities.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Finance.
- CPA or CPA candidate preferred.
- Minimum of 7 years’ experience, combination of public accounting and/or industry sector; real estate experience required
- Superior problem-solving and analytical skills, with great attention to detail.
- Ability to manage a small accounting department servicing multiple functions and tasks.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and thrive in a high volume, deadline-oriented environment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly with Excel.
- Yardi system experience preferred
