Primary Purpose:
Color Guard instructor will provide quality instruction to high school students enrolled in the Color Guard program. The instructor will prepare and direct for independent performance and competition.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
Two years of study at an institution of higher education (48 college hours); OR
An associate’s (or higher) degree; OR
A rigorous standard of quality and can demonstrate through a formal academic assessment, knowledge of, and the ability to assist in, instruction of reading (or reading readiness), writing (or writing readiness), and mathematics (or mathematics readiness), as appropriate.
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Knowledge of overall operation of color guard program and competition structure.
Ability to design and provide creative input toward the implementation of color guard performances, including equipment performances (i.e. flag, sabre, etc).
Provide choreography and musical design for shows and performances.
Knowledge of State and UIL policies governing Color Guard
Strong organizational, communication, public relations and interpersonal skills
Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
Experience:
Previous Color Guard experience
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Instructional Support
- Direct Color Guard performers in marching band, Winter and Spring indoor competitions
- Maintain a cooperative working relationship with campus administrator, band directors, band members and all band staff
- Instruct and prepare Color Guard students for all marching band performances through creative design, choreography and implementation.
- Oversee process of cleaning, repairing and storing of equipment.
- Conduct ongoing assessment of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
- Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals and teachers.

Working Conditions:
Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Must maintain emotional control and exercise reasoning and problem solving skills while under stress. Must demonstrate ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written). Should be able to interpret procedures and analyze data for decision-making. Frequent in-district and occasional in-state or national travel. Occasional prolonged and irregular hours.
Safety: Contribute to the prevention of accidents and injuries by observing safety rules and District policy, practicing the principles and skills taught in safety training, wearing personal protective equipment as required, reporting injuries and incidences immediately to supervisor, and being proactive in the ongoing efforts to improve and maintain workplace safety.
EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually by the supervisor in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy. Evaluation will be documented on the Staff Evaluation form for this position.
