The Chief Academic Officer (CAO) is the second officer of the university, serving as the Vice-President for Academic Administration. The primary function of the CAO serves to ensure that relevant academic activities contribute to the fulfillment of the university’s mission. This person carries broad responsibility for the university’s academic programs, goals, and excellence. The CAO reports to the President and is a member of the President’s Cabinet.

Qualifications summary

The CAO must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing that holds a doctoral degree. This individual must show evidence of effective spiritual and academic leadership. Other qualifications can be found in the qualifications section of the full job description.

Duties and responsibilities

Among other duties and responsibilities, the Chief Academic Officer is expected to perform the following :

  • Provide academic leadership for the university, in harmony with the mission and values of the institution and the philosophy of Seventh-day Adventist education.
  • Collaborate with campus leadership on strategic planning and its implementation.
  • Affirm the Seventh-day Adventist faith throughout the academic process.
  • Supervise curriculum planning and program development and ensure the integrity and excellence of academic programs.
  • Oversee faculty recruitment, appointment, development, promotion, and tenure.
  • Oversee assessment of academic programs and their faculty.
  • Coordinate the university’s relationships with accrediting bodies.
  • Encourage and strengthen individual and institutional research and creative scholarship efforts.
  • Oversee the development and optimization of institutional libraries and other learning resources.
  • Oversee the development, publication, and application of the University Bulletin and academic policies.

Supervisory responsibilities

The following individuals report to the CAO : the associate and assistant academic VPs, all academic deans, the registrar, and the principals of Andrews Academy and RMES.

Qualifications

  • Doctoral level degree required.
  • Evidence of effective spiritual leadership required.
  • Evidence of effective academic leadership required, preferably with a successful track record in Adventist higher education administration.
  • Evidence of an understanding of the biblical worldview as foundational for nurturing faith throughout the teaching-learning process.
  • Evidence of engagement with higher education issues.
  • Professional teaching experience, preferably at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, with familiarity of diverse teaching and delivery modalities.
  • Experience in intercultural contexts, preferably in international settings.
  • A track record of engaging in and / or promoting research, scholarship, and innovation.
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated visionary skills and the ability to oversee strategic academic planning and organizational development efforts relating to institutional change.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, verbal, public speaking, and written communication skills in English.
  • Technical competencies

    Ability to function effectively within the traditional Microsoft Office suite.

    Interpersonal interactions

    Must maintain positive relationships with on- and off-campus constituent groups.

    Physical demands

    Normal office physical demands, walking around campus, and capacity for travel, locally and internationally.

    Work environment

    Regular office environment.
