Position Summary:
Performs advanced technical nursing duties in the Texas Health Steps program. This role requires a proactive approach to patient care, assessing and responding to rapidly changing situations, and confidence in making clinical decisions. Assists with other related duties in providing patient care in local public health programs. Duties may include explaining the department agency’s services to groups or individuals. The activities will be based on education preparation and experience. Comfort with autonomy and strong independent judgment is crucial. Work is performed under the administrative supervision of the licensed PA, NP, physician, and nurse manager. Demonstrates quality and effectiveness in work habits and clinical practice and treats co-workers, patients, and all members of the Health District team with dignity and respect.
Education/Licensure:
Current license to practice as a registered nurse in Texas.
Essential Functions:
Upholds ACCHD’s Policies and Procedures and applicable state, federal, and local laws. Excels in autonomous roles and demonstrates strong independent judgment. Interview patients or relatives to obtain appropriate medical/social, health risk profile, health history, and immunization status. Performs screening tests for which they have been prepared. Provides medication according to agency policy and as ordered by a physician. Takes vital signs and measurements; records findings on appropriate forms. Draws blood by venipuncture or finger puncture. Collects specimens for laboratory examination. Administers medications, immunizations, and treatment – observes patients for unusual symptoms and reactions. Conducts physical, developmental, and psychosocial assessments of patient health needs and implements appropriate actions. Maintains patient confidentiality. Assists in developing and implementing community health education programs and treatment or program plans. Implements patient teaching in cooperation with the providers. Maintains records and prepares oral reports. Utilizes community relationships to contribute to a better public understanding of health services. May participate in quality assurance reviews. Performs related work as assigned.
Work Schedule:
Schedule to provide patient care during clinic operations adequately. The clinic is open Monday – Thursday, 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM, and hours vary during the year.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of nursing techniques and procedures; health care laws and regulations; medical diagnoses and procedures; accepted medical treatment programs; and community health and nursing care principles, practices, and procedures. Ability to provide patient care, prepare and maintain records, and explain public health law. Knowledge of public health services. Good health and physical condition sufficient to permit full performance of duties of the position.
