What are the responsibilities and job description for the Veterinary Sterile Processing Assistant position at Animal Emergency and Speciality Center?
Animal Emergency and Specialty Center in Poulsbo, WA, is growing and adding a Sterile Processing Assistant to support our Surgical Service. Our ideal candidate would have at least 1 year experience in cleaning and sterlizing surgical instruments and equipment in either a veterinary or human setting.
Summary of Job Function:
- The Sterile Processing Assistant supports the veterinary surgical team in ensuring quality surgical care for all patients by maintaining and sterilizing surgical and procedural equipment, maintaining surgical and procedural inventory, and preserving cleanliness and efficiency of the sterile hospital environment.
- Performs efficient and meticulous decontamination of surgical instruments and equipment, as well as inspecting and assembling surgical instruments, equipment, trays, and packs according to prescribed protocols and industry standards for sterilization. Work also includes assisting in record keeping and monitoring equipment operations; maintaining department inventory; identifying and reporting supply equipment and procedure problems and dispensing equipment and supplies.
Primary responsibilities:
- Surgical packs and sterilization
- Collects and cleans surgical equipment and instruments after procedure
- Inspect instruments and equipment after each use, identifying damage or malfunction
- Assembles instrument packs and other surgical items
- Properly wrap surgical instruments and materials
- Sterilize surgical equipment and instruments in accordance with manufacturer and OSHA standards using different agents which may include steam and ethylene oxide sterilization
- Be certified or willing to become certified as an ETO gas sterilizer operator
- Surgical equipment care and maintenance
- Maintain supply area and accurate inventory levels, including restocking and requesting restocking of surgical supplies
- Surgery
- Monitor the surgery schedule to ensure all necessary equipment will be available for scheduled surgeries.
- Prepare the OR for surgery, select appropriate packs, instruments, and supplies for the procedure being performed
- Assist with providing surgical equipment during surgery
- Assist with cleaning of the ORs following procedures
- Maintain accurate records of sterilization cycles
- Communication
- Communicate clearly regarding daily surgery plans, scheduling and cleaning needs throughout the course of the workday
- Maintain open and clear communications with members of the surgical team regarding equipment needs and the status of the operating room
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must have a minimum of one year experience in a sterile supply setting.
- Must have a valid high school diploma or GED. AVA is preferred but not required.
- Knowledge of general surgical procedures and protocols.
- Scientific background with an understanding of microbiology is preferred.
- Excellent communication skills. Strong work ethic and a positive attitude.
- Must be flexible and able to adapt to new situations.
- Ability to act as a team player, adhering to all core values of the hospital.
- Attention to detail and ability to ensure accurate pack contents and sterilization procedures
- Organizational skills to efficiently manage inventory and maintain a clean, organized work area

Hours and Compensation:
- Wednesdays and Thursdays from 7 am to 7 pm, Tuesdays and Fridays for 4 hours, flexible hours these days.
- Hourly range $20-$22/ hour
Job Types: Full-time, Part-time
Pay: $20.00 - $22.00 per hour
Expected hours: 30 – 34 per week
