Full Job Description

Experienced Veterinary Technician or Assistant wanted for an after-hours emergency hospital in the Braselton area. Animal Emergency Care of Braselton is a small animal clinic where we treat cats and dogs on an emergency basis. Applicant must have experience and must be able to work weekends and holidays. This is a good opportunity to be part of building a great team. Animal Emergency Care of Braselton is a drug-free workplace. A pre-employment drug test is required.

Animal Emergency Care of Braselton's Veterinary Technician is a specialist in patient treatment, nursing, and client communication while providing support to receptionists, fellow technicians, and veterinarians.

These functions include:

· Technical Duties – accurately and reliably collect and perform routine laboratory procedures, dispense medications, place IV catheters, take radiographs, and assist in surgery, as needed.

Must be skilled in IV catheter placement and venipuncture to obtain blood samples or give IV medications.

· Patient-Treatment – prepare and administer oral medication and injectables.

· Patient Nursing – maintain hospitalized patients and perform scheduled procedures or treatments as needed per ICU records, monitor anesthesia, assist in surgery, obtain vitals, and monitor patient conditions.

· Medical Records – enter medical notes and vital signs into patient records, create estimates of charges for medical plans, make notes in patient files of phone or in-person conversations.

· Communication – assist answering the phone, obtain and record patient histories and treatment, accurately relay patient information, and educate clients.

· Routine Procedures – perform venipunctures, give injections, suture removal, and fluid therapy.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, & ABILITIES:

· High School/General Education Degree is required.

· Strong organizational skills and ability to multitask. Must be able to remain calm under pressure, work independently and also work well on a team.

· Excellent people skills. Should be friendly, outgoing, compassionate, and be an active team member.

· Excellent verbal and written communication. * Proficient computer skills and ability to learn veterinary operational software. Experience with Cornerstone a plus.

· Ability to properly lift up to 50 pounds with and sometimes without assistance.

· Knowledge regarding/following federal, state, and clinic laws, regulations, and policy (OSHA, DEA, etc.)

· One to two years job experience working as a veterinary assistant/technician required.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES: (including but not limited to)

1. Perform essential responsibilities as defined in the Veterinary Assistant job description.

2. Compassionately and calmly approach and interact with clients and patients.

3. Collects specimens and performs routine hematology, chemistry, serology laboratory procedures, smears, cultures, and flotations.

4. Interpret and complete in-patient and out-patient workup requests by DVM.

5. Calculate dosages (with assistance from DVM), dispense and administer medications, vaccines, and treatments as prescribed by DVM.

6. Perform technical procedures. Including but not limited to: venipuncture, catheter placement, administer fluids, x-rays (including barium). Obtain and interpret vital signs.

7. Provide nursing care for patients throughout the day or night and report any abnormalities or concerns to co-workers and/or DVMs.

8. Prepare patients, instruments, and equipment for surgery. Monitor patients during surgery and recovery.

9. Maintain logs (surgery, controlled-substance, and patient in-house records).

10. Communicate and educate owners on emergency procedures, estimates of treatment, routine procedures, hospital protocol, and at home instructions following treatment in clinic.

11. Handle emergency situations by following established hospital policies and procedures for immediate treatment of patients.

12. Assure that testing, monitoring and support equipment such as anesthetic machines, laboratory equipment, and x-ray, is calibrated and in safe and prime operating condition (after adequate training provided).

13. Maintain hospital cleanliness and sterilization, and hospital supply restocking.

14. Perform other duties as assigned.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to hazards associated with aggressive patients; hazards associated with infected animals and controlled substances; exposure to unpleasant odors and noises; exposure to bites, scratches and animal wastes; risk of possible exposure to contagious diseases (rarely).
