At Animal Emergency & Specialty Center of Knoxville , we are dedicated to providing exceptional emergency and specialty care to pets in critical need. Our team operates 24 / 7, offering compassionate, high-quality care, and we are seeking a dynamic, experienced Veterinary Technician or Veterinary Technician Manager to oversee our second shift and overnight operations. This is a key leadership role that combines advanced clinical expertise with the responsibility of managing, guiding, and developing our team of veterinary technicians and support staff.

As the Evening and Overnight ER Veterinary Technician Manager , you will play a crucial role in ensuring the highest level of patient care while maintaining a positive, efficient, and supportive work environment. You will lead your team through busy, high-stress shifts and have the opportunity to shape the direction of our emergency services during non-daytime hours.

Key Responsibilities

Team Leadership and Development :

  • Lead and Inspire : Manage, mentor, and motivate a skilled team of veterinary technicians and paraprofessional staff to provide exceptional patient care.
  • Training & Development : Oversee new hire onboarding, continuous education, and skill development for all team members, ensuring that your staff is always growing and improving.
  • Performance Management : Conduct regular performance reviews, offer constructive feedback, and implement improvement plans as necessary to foster a culture of continuous learning.
  • Shift Coordination : Supervise shift schedules, ensuring the right balance of staff coverage to meet the needs of both patients and the team, and handle any staffing adjustments as needed.

Emergency & Critical Care Oversight :

  • Emergency Response : Supervise the triage, assessment, and stabilization of critically ill or injured animals, ensuring all emergency protocols are followed.
  • Advanced Veterinary Procedures : Oversee and perform advanced procedures including IV catheter placement, blood draws, anesthesia monitoring, diagnostic imaging (x-rays, ultrasound), and emergency surgeries.
  • Critical Care Management : Manage the care of hospitalized patients, ensuring all medical protocols are followed and the highest standard of care is maintained.
  • Operational Efficiency and Workflow Optimization :

  • Shift Operations : Ensure smooth and efficient workflow during the evening and overnight shifts, reducing wait times and optimizing patient care.
  • Inventory Management : Oversee inventory levels of medical supplies, equipment, and medications to ensure the clinic is fully stocked and prepared for emergency situations.
  • Protocol Adherence : Ensure compliance with clinic protocols, regulatory standards, and safety measures to maintain a safe and effective working environment.
  • Collaboration and Communication :

  • Cross-Shift Collaboration : Ensure effective communication with the day shift team to guarantee seamless handoffs and continuity of care between shifts.
  • Client Relations : Maintain excellent communication with pet owners, especially during high-stress situations, providing updates on their pet's condition and treatment plans.
  • Team Coordination : Work closely with senior management and veterinarians to align patient care standards and operational goals.
  • Skills, Knowledge & Expertise to be Successful

  • Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT), Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT), or equivalent working knowledge, with extensive experience in emergency and critical care.
  • 4 years of experience in a veterinary clinic, with at least 1-2 years in a leadership or supervisory role.
  • Proven experience in emergency care , including triage, stabilization, and treatment of critical patients.
  • Strong understanding of emergency protocols , anesthesia, diagnostic imaging, and critical care monitoring.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills , with the ability to mentor, motivate, and manage a team.
  • Conflict resolution skills and the ability to maintain a positive work environment under pressure.
  • Familiarity with managing medical inventory , ensuring proper supply levels and equipment maintenance.
  • Empathy & Compassion : A genuine passion for animals and the ability to empathize with pet owners, especially in emotionally charged situations.
  • Calm Under Pressure : Able to maintain a composed, efficient demeanor during high-stress, emergency scenarios.
  • Organized & Efficient : Strong time management skills, able to balance multiple tasks while maintaining the highest standards of patient care.
