What are the responsibilities and job description for the Veterinarian position at Animal Friends Humane Society?
Animal Friends Humane Society in Southwest Ohio is seeking an experienced veterinarian to join our dedicated team. Our Humane Society is a non-profit organization that works with our county to provide housing for the near 6,000 animals that enter our facility each year. We are looking to add a full-time veterinarian to our exceptional team and require someone with good interpersonal skills, who enjoys working as a team and is passionate about our mission. We strive to perform the highest quality veterinary care for our shelter population while they temporarily reside with us.
The Veterinarian, under general direction from the Executive Director, will:
- Examine animals’ pre-op to determine their ability to withstand surgery.
- Perform surgical sterilizations.
- Perform surgical procedures as needed within the limitations of our clinic.
- Examine animals post-op as necessary to ensure appropriate recovery.
- Provide recommendations for follow up care as needed.
- Ensure health of shelter population.
- Provide post-adoption veterinary services.
- Supervise handling and recording of controlled substances by licensed veterinary technician.
- Enter medical data into animal management system.
- Follow written and verbally communicated Standard Operating Procedures as determined by Humane Society.
- Remain current on safe and efficacious medical protocols regarding anesthesia, surgery and shelter medicine by participating in Continuing Education courses.
- Actively promote spay, neuter and educate public on responsible animal ownership.
- Actively support humane society staff and volunteers.
- Represent humane society in a professional and courteous manner at all times.
- Other duties as assigned.
Please note: All personnel may be required to perform duties outside of their normal responsibilities from time to time, as needed.
Requirements:

- DVM from accredited university.
- Current veterinary license in the state of Ohio.
- Minimum two years' experience in the field of veterinary medicine and high-volume surgical sterilization experience preferred.
- Interest in animal welfare and population control and serving underserved and at-risk populations.
- Must be able to work well in the hectic environment of an open admission shelter and possess excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Interest in ABVP Shelter Medicine Practice category specialty certification encouraged. Mentorship toward that goal is available.
