Job Title: Farm Animal Care Taker
Supports: Animal Nation Farm Animal Rescue & Sanctuary – (South Salem, NY)
Type: Part-time salaried employee – 21 hours/week
Reports To: Director of Operations
Position Summary
The Farm Animal Care Taker is responsible for the care of 200 animals living at our
Farm Animal Rescue & Sanctuary. This position serves a critical role within our organization, managing a scope of responsibilities; and provides direct oversight to the daily management and operations of our Farm sanctuary. The Farm Animal Care Taker is responsible for training and managing a team of 15-20 Animal Care volunteers. This position ensures all Animal Nation animals are provided the highest quality of care and reports directly to the Director of Operations.
Qualifications, Leadership Expectations
- Large Animal/Farm Experience Strongly Preferred– Working knowledge of Farm animals – (including fowl)
- Two – five years of experience in an animal-related or non-profit environment preferred
- Must be competent and confident in handling (and being around) Farm animals and comfortable amid varying species
- Strong leadership/interpersonal skills –(ie:)dependability, responsibility, self-motivator, team player, good listener, patient
- Must demonstrate good verbal and written communication skills and effectively lead
- Animal Care volunteers to create a cohesive team and positive work environment
- Must work well with the public, including persons of varied racial, ethnic, cultural, socioeconomic backgrounds, sexual preference, and with individuals who are differently- abled.
- Must have strong administrative skills, be highly organized and remain flexible under pressure. Attention to detail and ability to prioritize is a must
- Must be computer proficient, including working knowledge of Windows, Microsoft
- Office (especially Word & Excel), Google Suite (Google Sheets & Docs) and be able to learn new programs quickly
- Able to work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Able to lift 40-50 pounds (hay bales/wheel barrows) strenuous/manual labor
- Willing to work on weekends/various weekdays/holidays and various shift times
- Meet regularly with the Director of Operations to discuss issues/recommendations or improvements to ensure the sanctuary is running at its best.
- Bi-lingual (English/Spanish) a plus, but not required.
Duties & Responsibilities
- First class treatment and care of the animals entrusted to Animal Nation, ensuring the highest quality care
- Co-manage Farm sanctuary daily operations
- Manage 15-20 Animal Care volunteers
- Responsible for ensuring volunteers follow ALL animal care protocols for their own safety as well as the animals. IMPORTANT! Be able to provide both positive feedback and areas of improvement with volunteers not following established animal care protocols.
- Co-manage ALL Animal Care volunteer communications – weekly email updates
- Co-responsible for volunteer on-site white-board communication
- Be available in weather emergencies
- Cover shifts as needed, rising from animal care volunteer no-shows/illness or vacation schedules
- Ability to handle after hour emergencies independently (on premise animal welfare checks, bottle feeding/medication administration)
- Work cooperatively with all volunteers and recognize the talent and commitment they bring to Animal Nation, Inc.
- Organize and co-host volunteer work parties (at minimum) monthly
- Coordinate any emergency animal or personnel/volunteer intervention with President
- Coordinate OR transport animals to/from veterinary hospitals at the direction of the President (Valid driver’s license and good driving record required)
- With Director of Operations oversight, maintain accurate and complete animal care records for outside agency review
- Organize photos and stories for website and social media as well as any marketing and fundraising opportunities
- With Director of Operations oversight, responsible for visitor experience to/at the Farm sanctuary -
- Meet and tour donors and approved public (by appointment)
- Act as a representative of Animal Nation, Inc. presenting yourself in a professional manner including personal hygiene and attire.
- Maintain and operate existing sanctuary infrastructure
- Recommend facility upgrades/projects-purchases for Board consideration
- Maintain Emergency Response Facility and Animal Care Protocols and Training with direction from the President
Salary: Part-time salaried exempt position - $20,800 to $22,935 compensation annually
