What are the responsibilities and job description for the Volunteer Board Position (non-profit animal shelter) position at Animal Rescue League of Berks?
Function: Provide governance to Animal Rescue League of Berks County, stewarding and protecting its mission to “…protect animals, provide a safe haven and promote innovative programs and services to help both people and animals in need throughout Berks County,” while representing the organization to the community.
Term of service: Three-year term, with the option to serve two consecutive terms.
Duties
Planning
Strategic planning
- Approve the organization’s mission and strategic plan and regularly review board’s and management’s implementation efforts
- Annually assess the environment and design and approve the organization’s strategy in relation to the mission and plan
- Annually review and approve the organization’s plans for funding its strategy
Assure that the status of organizational strength and manpower planning is equal to the requirements of both short- and long-range goals
Maintain an updated chief executive officer/senior leadership succession plan
Organization
- Select, monitor, appraise, advise, support, reward, and, when necessary, change the chief executive officer
- Approve organizational and board policies
- Approve compensation schedule and benefit policies and practices
- Approve major actions of the organization, such as capital expenditures and major program and service changes
Fundraising
- Drive the development of a strategic plan that identifies budget requirements and then determine appropriate fundraising goals
- Develop a diversified fundraising strategy and priorities, policies, and approaches
- Cultivate potential donors
- Assist in asking donors for gifts
- Monitor and evaluate fundraising campaigns
- Contribute a financial gift of an amount of personal significance
Finance and Audit
Budget
- Review, approve and regularly monitor the annual budget that supports the work of the organization and ensures that it is sufficiently resourced
Planning
- Review and approve the organization’s multi-year financial goals
- Plan for financial sustainability
- Ensure the financial structure of the organization is adequate for its current needs and its long-range strategy
- Establish appropriate policies to define and identify conflicts of interest throughout the organization and ensure those policies are diligently administered and enforced
- Review compliance with relevant material laws affecting the organization
Reporting
- Be assured that published reports properly reflect the operating results and financial condition of the organization
- Ensure that the Board and its committees are adequately and currently informed (through reports and other methods) of the financial condition of the organization and its operations
- Review and approve the Form 990
Audit
- Hire an independent auditor
- Review and approve the annual audit
Board
- Be an engaged and responsible board member
- Serve as an active member of at least one committee
- Attend and participate at all board meetings and applicable committee meetings
- Execute the role of organizational ambassador
Requirements
- A passion for animal welfare and the mission of the organization
- Time to commit at least 5 hours a month to perform the job
- Strongly encouraged to pursue at least one year of experience with the organization as a volunteer in some capacity or previous relevant board experience
- A strong commitment to execute the role and responsibilities of board member for this organization
- Absence of any conflict of interest with the organization
- Willingness and ability to serve in a leadership role on the board
- Make an annual contribution of personal significance
