Monroe County Friends of Animals (MCFA) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit volunteer organization with a mission to provide for and continuously improve the health, happiness, and fortunes of the homeless and abandoned cats and dogs in Monroe County. MCFA owns and operates the Eastbourne Animal Center in Madisonville, TN.
In August 2024, we opened the doors to our brand-new, state-of-the-art 27,000-square-foot facility in beautiful rural East Tennessee. We are committed to operating a premier animal shelter while providing low-cost spay/neuter services and community outreach to help pet owners and reduce pet overpopulation. Under the direction of the Animal Center Director, the Shelter Veterinarian is responsible for providing spay/neuter services, medical care, and preventive treatments for shelter animals and community-owned pets. The veterinarian must also maintain compliance with Tennessee state and federal veterinary regulations.
- Works under the general direction of the Animal Center Director to provide medical treatment for ill and injured animals.
- Performs preventative veterinary care to maintain a healthy animal population and to create a healthy environment for animals located at Monroe County Friends of Animals/Eastbourne Animal Center.
- Participates in operational and planning decisions regarding animal care and health.
- Performs surgical sterilization on shelter animals and community-owned pets.
- Evaluates and corrects post-surgical complications.
- Provides surgical support for injuries in accordance with animal service policies.
- Provides daily evaluation of animals at the center.
- Diagnoses and determines appropriate treatment plan for sick and injured animals.
- Evaluates and determines appropriate treatment for injured animals, including pain relief and euthanasia.
- Supervises the administration of vaccines for animals housed at the center, and community pets.
- Communicates with staff on veterinary-related issues.
- Maintains inventory of medical supplies.
- Performs additional functions (essential or otherwise) which may be assigned.
- Graduation from an AVMA accredited Veterinary School of Medicine.
- Possess a current, valid Tennessee license to practice veterinary medicine, be federally accredited, and possess a current DEA license. These qualifications must be maintained as a condition of continued employment.
- Experience and knowledge of veterinary medicine, treatment, and care as it relates to the care of shelter animals.
- Must be able to communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing.
- This position requires physical exertion such as walking, standing, bending, or similar activities for long periods of time.
- It may require considerable and strenuous physical exertions, such as lifting heavy objects over 50 pounds.
- Exposure to moderate risks or discomforts, such as working with irritant chemicals and sharp instruments.
- May require the use of protective gear, including masks, gloves, goggles, and coats.
$110,000 yearly salary
3 days a week; 9 am to 4 pm (could change during special events).
