Position Summary
Supervise, assign, review and participate in the work of staff responsible for enforcing animal control laws and ordinances; ensure work quality and adherence to established policies and procedures and perform the more technical and complex tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.
This is a safety sensitive position subject to random drug/alcohol testing.

Minimum Education, Experience And Additional Requirements
Education and experience directly related to the minimum requirements below may be interchangeable on a year for year basis.
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in zoology, biology, animal science, natural or environmental science, public administration, business administration or a related field; and
Four (4) years of experience in enforcing ordinances related to the control, impoundment and disposition of animals; and
To include two (2) years of experience in responding to and investigating malicious animal cruelty reports.
Lead or direct supervisory experience preferred.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver's License or the ability to obtain by date of hire.
Possession of a City Operator's Permit (COP) within 6 months from date of hire.
Preferred Knowledge
- Operations, services and activities of an animal control program
- Principles of supervision, training and performance evaluation
- Modern and complex principles and practices of animal control and handling controlled substances
- Basic computer programs such as excel, word
- Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes and regulations
- Methods and techniques of enforcing animal control rules and regulations
- Operational characteristics of animal control equipment and tools
- Occupational hazards and standard safety practices
Preferred Skills & Abilities
- Supervise, organize, and review the work of lower level staff
- Select, supervise, train and evaluate staff
- Identify various breeds and species of animals
- Operate a variety of animal control equipment in a safe and effective manner
- Provide testimony in court cases
- Utilize basic computer programs used in the operation of assigned area
- Interpret and explain City policies and procedures
- Prepare clear and concise reports
- Communicate clearly and concisely
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work including City officials and the general public
