About the Durango Community :
Southwest Colorado’s biggest city, Durango, is an absolute beautiful place to live, relax and retire. At an altitude of 6,512 feet above sea level, the winters are more mild (but still plentiful Rocky Mountain snow) and summers warmer than higher elevation towns. The population of nearly 20,000 makes it one of Colorado’s largest mountain towns, too. For the surrounding towns of Bayfield, Pagosa Springs, Mancos and Cortez it even acts as “the city”, attracting the other locals from up to an hour away for a fun night on the town. There are many great bars and restaurants in Durango thanks to its year round tourism and neighboring towns. Great galleries, specialty shops, coffee shops, and live music contribute to a vibrant downtown area on Main Street. Purgatory Resort’s 1,605 skiable acres and 2,029 rolling feet of vertical are only 30 minutes to the north. Trimble Hot Springs relaxes aching muscles and refreshes the mind throughout the year. Durango is also attracts tourists from all over the country and world thanks to our skiing, white water rafting down the Animas River, hiking, world class mountain biking, as well as Native American history nearby at Mesa Verde National Park and our famous Durango Silverton Narrow Gauge Train, allowing passengers to ride to a nearby unique mining town teeming with history. Telluride is only 2 hours away and Moab is less than 3.
Durango boasts a well above average public education system. Fort Lewis College is right here, as well. Our community is filled with young families and flocks of retirees. If you’re looking for 4 seasons, small town atmosphere with a good bustle then Durango may be the spot for you!
