Position Summary
Under the direction of the Circulation Manager, the Building Supervisor assists with various supervisory functions, projects, and tasks to ensure smooth functioning of day-to-day operations and adherence to excellent public service standards.
This position includes working evening and/or weekend hours as needed.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following; other duties may be assigned:
- Provides a full range of customer service for patrons and staff including responding to routine and moderately complex patron concerns regarding library policies and procedures.
- Supervisory responsibility for full-time and part-time Bookshelver/Processors (Book/Pros).
- Interview, hire, train, and schedule Book/Pro employees.
- On-site Supervisory responsibility for Desk Clerks, Library Technicians, and PLAs.
- Plans, assigns, and directs work ensuring equitable work distribution within job categories.
- Approves time records and authorizes overtime and leave requests for Book/Pros within departmental budgets.
- Appraises job performance and addresses issues with Book/Pro staff.
- Contributes to performance evaluations for Desk Clerks, Library Technicians, and PLAs who have worked on-site.
- Provides oversight of the day-to-day operations of the building and grounds and reports needs for maintenance, repair, and service.
- Assists with the coordination and implementation of new or modified policies, procedures, services, and operations.
- Writes procedures as assigned for areas of responsibility.
- Assists with revision and implementation of work methods.
- Provides oversight of circulation functions for Michigan eLibrary services and Inter-Library Loan.
- Monitors and assesses statistics to optimize customer service functions.
- Oversees damaged and missing parts, billed items, and search lists.
- Oversees sales and fee collections including cash balancing and bank deposits.
- Helps monitor and assists with meeting room set ups.
- Participates on library teams for special projects as assigned.
- May perform tasks assigned to subordinate staff as needed.
- Monitor and order supplies.
- Maintain a prompt and reliable attendance record.
Minimum Qualifications include:
- Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university; or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Two years successful experience in a supervisory position.
- Experience in customer service.
- Experience interviewing and hiring staff.
- Experience training staff.
- Ability to exercise discretion, make reasonable and sound judgments, and maintain confidentiality.
- Strong commitment to public service.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively as a member of a team and readily adapt to workplace changes.
- Excellent public service attitude: friendly, energetic, and flexible.
- Ability to manage multiple projects efficiently, set priorities, meet deadlines, and work under pressure.
- Interpersonal and judgment skills necessary to work effectively with Library patrons, staff and visitors.
- Strong computer skills including knowledge of Microsoft Office software.
- Ability to lift up to 40 pounds.
- Ability to push/pull fully loaded carts and large items from the tools collection.
Preferred Qualifications include:
- Experience working in a public library with some knowledge of standard public library functions and procedures.
- Experience in using library circulation systems.
- Experience in scheduling service desks.
