Position Summary
Under the direction of the Safety Lead, and the supervision of the Safety Supervisor, the Library Safety Assistant patrols the buildings, parking lots, and grounds to assure a safe and secure environment for patrons and staff.
This position includes working evening and/or weekend hoursNOTE: This position requires up to 60 hours of paid, supervised training.Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following; other duties as assigned:
- Continually monitors the Library’s buildings and grounds and enforces the Library’s Rules of Behavior.
- Monitors staff areas for trespassers.
- Monitors the buildings to assure compliance with governmental regulations and reports any violations to the Safety Supervisor.
- Reports damage to the buildings, furnishings or equipment.
- Maintains safety after hours for meetings, or when repair work is scheduled.
- Serves as a greeter to patrons entering the Library.
- Responds to emergencies and provides support as needed.
- Writes detailed incident reports.
- Operates the Library’s automated telephone switchboard to direct incoming calls and performs duties associated with the shipping and receiving office while serving in this capacity.
- Required to be on site for all work
- Maintain a prompt and reliable attendance record.
Minimum Qualifications include:
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or six or more months of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. (Applicant must be 18 or older unless high school diploma or GED has been obtained.)

- Ability to understand and follow detailed instructions.
- Ability to communicate clearly and efficiently with patrons, visitors, staff and vendors.
- Ability to assume responsibility and work well without close supervision after receiving instructions.
- Ability to work under stressful conditions, exercise good judgment, and act quickly in emergencies.
- Proficiency in the use of computers with a working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Ability to bend, reach, walk, stand, climb stairs, and lift up to 50 lbs. without assistance.
