- Work closely with the Executive Director and Management Team to develop and execute organizational plans that serve Rec & Ed’s mission and values and achieve a balanced budget.
- Drive maintenance and development of revenue streams through growth in programs, services, and/or customer reach. Assist in the procurement and financial oversight of grant opportunities.
- Maintain existing and develop new partnerships with vendors/businesses, nonprofits, and other organizations that help serve Rec & Ed’s mission. Positively represent Rec & Ed at school district and external meetings and events.
- Ensure Rec & Ed offers inclusive environments and to our diverse customer base, including overseeing the departmental scholarship program and other practices that make programs accessible to all.
- Oversee Rec & Ed marketing efforts, including staff, plans and strategies.
- Oversee departmental budget activities in collaboration with the Executive Director, department finance staff, and the district finance department. This includes contributing to quarterly budget review meetings and the annual budget planning process, monitoring ongoing revenues and expenditures, developing reports, monitoring compliance with district policies and contractual agreements, and problem solving on budget issues.
- Contribute to Rec & Ed’s ongoing continuous improvement processes. Develop or refine policies, procedures, and processes as needed to improve operations.
- Attend monthly district leadership team meetings and annual retreats.
- Work with district Human Resources, Finance, and Facilities departments as needed to ensure Rec & Ed plans and procedures align with the district’s.
- Serve as lead staff for the city-schools Recreation Advisory Commission (RAC).
- Provide leadership to regular and seasonal/temporary staff and volunteers, directly supervising four program managers and other administrative staff.
- Lead monthly Management Team meeting in collaboration with the Executive Director.
- Lead Rec & Ed staff meetings in collaboration with the Management Team.
- Support staff well-being through a positive organization climate and practices. Cultivate an environment of open, inclusive, and constructive dialogue in all departmental meetings.

The Director of Community Education and Recreation oversees operations of the Ann Arbor Public Schools Rec & Ed department, including the staff, programs, and Community Services budget. Rec & Ed programs include a licensed before/after school child care service, youth and adult recreational sports, and youth and adult enrichment, fitness, and yoga classes. As a mission-driven leader, the Director ensures that Rec & Ed programs for preschoolers through senior adults are centered on equity; build community; promote health, wellbeing, and joy; and offer opportunities for lifelong learning. This is a full-time, in-person position, with some flexibility for remote work.
