POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the direct supervision of the Director of Healthy Living, Wellness Floor Staff Member oversees the Wellness Center: cardiovascular equipment, selectorized equipment, and free weight areas; emphasizes member safety and education; creates a relaxed, inviting and non-threatening atmosphere for all members in accordance with the policies and procedures of the Ann Arbor YMCA.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Be actively and visibly involved with members, volunteers and staff in a positive, friendly manner that communicates and demonstrates the YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.
- Demonstrate appropriate use of equipment, clearly explain equipment usage to members and work at skill level appropriate for the member. Accurately adjust machine setting to fit members.
- Builds effective, authentic relationships with members; helps members connect with each other and the YMCA.
- Answers questions from members to support them in achieving their goals related to healthy living. Maintains working knowledge of wellness and trends to provide effective information and support to members.
- Follows YMCA policies and procedures; responds to emergency situations.
- Attend scheduled staff meetings.
GENERAL FUNCTIONS:
Exemplify a commitment to diversity and inclusion.
Attend scheduled staff meetings.
Reads all YMCA communications including but not limited to email.
Any other duties as needed.
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Currently certified in CPR, First Aid and AED, or obtain within 60 days of hire.
- Ability to relate to Y members in a positive manner.
- Must be a highly-motivated person with leadership ability and strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to communicate and listen effectively as well as a willingness to learn.
- Exposure to skills to be taught, informal or on the job training; equivalent to two years of high school.
- Thorough knowledge of exercise science is ideal; including functional anatomy, exercise physiology, nutrition and injury prevention.
- Understanding of YMCA mission and cause is required.
- Multi-lingual ability is preferred.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the floor) for long periods of time.
- Must be able to lift and carry food and supplies weighing up to 20 pounds.
- Must be able to assist participant weighing up to 180 pounds
- Ability to stand or sit while maintaining alertness for several hours at a time.
- Position may require bending, leaning, kneeling, and walking.
- Ability to speak concisely and effectively communicate.
- Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency.
