Veterinary Assistant
Reporting Structure: The Veterinary Assistant operates under the supervision of the
Technician Supervisor and the Practice Manager. The practitioners provide continuing or individual assignments. They provide additional specific instructions for new, difficult or unusual assignments in animal health care, including suggested work methods or advice on source materials available.
Job Overview: The Veterinary Assistant assists the veterinarians and technicians with patient care and treatment, monitors hospitalized pets, maintains inventory, prepares prescriptions, performs routine in-house laboratory work, educates clients regarding veterinary care and procedures, and assists with surgical procedures at Ann Road Animal Hospital. The Veterinary Assistant uses initiative in carrying out recurring assignments independently without specific instructions, but refers deviations, problems, and unfamiliar situations not covered by instructions to the practitioner for decision help. The practitioners assure that finished work and methods used are technically accurate and in compliance with instructions or established procedures.
Essential Functions:
- Review medical records and notes made by admitting receptionist in order to discern the nature of the visit, and any tests or procedures that may be needed.
- Monitor patients’ vital signs, use proper restraint techniques, X-Ray assistance.
- Clean and wrap surgical packs.
- Housekeeping duties, include but are not limited to: sweeping, mopping, laundry, disposing of trash, restocking.
- Scan and attach patient’s info to patient files.
Position type and expected hours of work:
- Full Time preferred
- Part Time (to be discussed with Manager)
- 8-10 hour Shifts; Monday – Sunday
- Weekends may be required
- Most Holidays required
Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Certificate of Veterinary Assistant preferred
- Previous veterinary experience preferred
Job Type: Full-time
