Overnight Shelter Advocate

Position: Shelter Advocate – Overnights (FT 30 hours )

Accountability: Manager of Shelter Services

Hours: Will generally work Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday, 10:30 PM-8:30 AM.

Summary/Objective

The Shelter Advocate promotes the mission and models the values of Anna Marie’s Alliance by providing direct services to residents.

Minimum Education & Experience Requirements

· Four year degree in human service field (Social Work, Psychology, Criminal Justice), or four years equivalent relevant work experience.

· Fully operational vehicle, valid driver’s license, and current car insurance.

Essential Functions

1. Stay awake and alert for the full shift, so as to respond to resident needs, crisis situations/calls, and law enforcement phone calls.

2. Provide advocacy and support, including housing, financial assistance and employment.

3. Respond to crisis situations on telephone and within the shelter promptly, and provide resource information and referral.

4. Maintain shelter security at all times. Clearly understands the shelter security system.

5. Welcome new residents and assist in identifying immediate needs during intake process.

6. Meet with residents and set goals.

7. Assist clients/residents in identifying their strengths and assist them in exploring alternatives and solutions to barriers by provision of information on local resources and personal skill building.

8. Conscientiously communicate/documenting information between shifts for shift change meeting.

9. Maintain client confidentiality and follow safety policies.

10. Assist residents/clients in clarifying their goals, identifying and exploring alternatives and solutions to those goals.

11. Keep accurate statistics and place in Vela.

12. Assist in household chores.

13. Participate in Check-In Meetings on a quarterly basis, and in other meetings as requested.

14. Understands how to utilize Trauma Informed Care when working with victims

15. Perform other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands

This position requires the ability to sit, stand and walk and occasionally lift up to 30-35 lbs. This position is responsible for doing occasional light housekeeping such as sweeping, vacuuming, mopping dishes, packing, and other household chores. This position will use office equipment, including computer and telephone. Must be able to stay awake and alert during all work hours.

Travel

This position requires occasional travel in the local area. Out of the area and overnight travel is rarely required.
