JOB SUMMARY
Serves as a school-based instructional leader who provides direct instruction to students and supports, mentors, and coaches other classroom teachers. Works with other district and school lead teachers and district staff to design and deliver customized and episodic professional learning, provides curriculum and instruction guidance, identifies students in need of interventions, and progress monitors student learning. Provides school, department, team, or teacher leadership, expertise, and support in one or more of the following areas: literacy, English language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, the arts, interdisciplinary learning, specialized instruction, English language development, world languages, gifted and talented education, career and technical education, health and physical education, data analysis and collaborative planning, behavioral interventions, new teacher development, pedagogy, and/or other identified specialty.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provides leadership, expertise, and support in one or more identified areas, departments, or teams.
- Provides direct instruction to students, as a teacher of record, for an average of 50% of their time.
- Mentors new teachers and other teachers who need additional support, including co-teaching, lesson demonstration, and support for professional growth, including mentoring teachers pursuing National Board Certification.
- Supports teachers as part of a peer assistance and review process.
- Leads school or department/team level workshops, demonstrations, and other professional development opportunities to ensure the effective implementation and delivery of curriculum, assessments, and instruction in one or more content areas.
- Leads content, department, and/or grade-level collaborative planning to help teams develop and analyze lessons, identify students needing tiered interventions, and monitor and analyze data to determine instructional needs and supports.
- Facilitates and leads data analysis to determine the next steps for teaching and learning, including necessary professional development for team members.
- Facilitates teacher reflection on curriculum and assessment resources and documents; regularly collects and submits teacher feedback to appropriate district offices.
- Serves as a liaison between school, grade level, and/or department and AACPS central office staff.
- Serves on the school’s leadership team.
- Performs other related duties as assigned within the same classification or lower.

Education
- Bachelor's Degree in related field of education from a regionally accredited college or university required.
Experience
- Five (5) years experience as an effective classroom teacher as demonstrated by student proficiency and growth data required; and
- Three (3) years experience leading teams of teachers with proven success in improving teaching and learning required; and
- Three (3) years experience in school and/or district-level instructional leadership required.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics
- Demonstrated knowledge and proven practice using current evidence-based strategies in instruction and participating in reflective practices, as defined by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, to include action research, professional learning communities, lesson studies, and other grade and or content-related best practices.
- Ability to lead teams of teachers in improving teaching and learning through evidence-based and reflective practices.
- Ability to mentor, coach, and support teachers as they grow in their content knowledge, pedagogical skills, and reflective practices.
- Ability to apply research to develop lessons, teaching techniques, and instructional interventions.
- Ability to determine if interventions are successful and then alter the interventions as necessary to improve student outcomes.
- Teach using culturally responsive and trauma-informed pedagogy.
- Ability to employ a variety of teaching styles to respond to the needs of diverse learners.
- Familiarity or experience with electronic leave reporting/substitute requesting systems (e.g. SmartFind Express), electronic grade reporting (e.g. Power Teacher GradeBook) and electronic teacher/parent communication tool (e.g. ParentConnect) and ability to use instructional technology hardware such as document cameras, presenters, and SmartBoards, etc.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively work and communicate with diverse populations.
- Demonstrated proficiency with business technology applications (e.g. Video/Web Conferencing, Microsoft Office Suite – Word, Excel, Outlook, and/or PowerPoint preferred).
Licenses and Certifications
Employee must retain active licenses, certifications, and enrollment as a condition of employment.
- Upon hire, National Board Certification issued by National Board for Professional Teaching Standards required.
- Hold or be eligible for Educator Certification: Advanced Professional Certificate (APC) issued by Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) required; or
- Hold or be eligible for Educator License: Advanced Professional License (APL) issued by Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) required.
