Responsible for facilitating communication between deaf and hard of hearing students and their teachers, hearing peers and other school staff to support access to instruction in the educational setting, including extra-curricular school activities. |

Essential Duties & Responsibilities |

1. Provides interpreter services for both academic and extra-curricular school activities. 2. Interpret/transliterate sign to voice or voice to sign; instruction, directions, questions, answers and remarks, conveying the content and the intent of the message in the mode of communication determined appropriate for the student (American Sign Language, Manually coded English, spoken language etc.). 3. Becomes familiar with vocabulary and class content to ensure that information is interpreted with accuracy and clarity. 4. Paraphrases or interprets the language of instruction appropriate for the student's level of understanding. 5. Assesses the physical environment of the classroom and position self to maximize student’s visual access to teacher, media and Educational Interpreter. 6. Assists with staff trainings related to educational interpreting in the school setting. 7. Fosters appropriate use of the Educational Interpreter in a variety of settings. 8. Maintains interpreter code of ethics and confidentiality. 9. Reflects positive, professional attitude and appearance. 10. Complies with all school policies, procedures and standards. 11. Performs other related duties as required. |

Education |
|||
· High School Diploma or equivalency certification · Graduation from a recognized Interpreter training program preferred |

Experience |
|||
· None required · Previous interpreting experience in educational setting preferred |

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities |
|||
· Excellent listening, verbal, and written English language skills. · Fluent sign language skills. · Ability to accurately interpret conversation and presentation. · Knowledge of advanced grammar and usage in both languages. · Knowledge of education related terminology. · Willingness to enhance educational interpreting skills and knowledge by pursuing training and professional development. · Demonstrate professionalism and exercise judgment consistent with working in an academic setting. · Ability to establish effective and cooperative relationships with professionals and school staff and diverse populations. · Ability to employ business technology tools (e.g. E-mail, AACPS Intranet, electronic benefits enrolment tool, Microsoft Office Suite, etc.). |

Licenses/Certifications |

· Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) completion preferred.. · National Interpreter Certification considered. |
