This posting will be used to fill Full Time, Permanent, Safety Sensitive, Deputy Sheriff I (Entry Level) positions within the Sheriff's Office of Anne Arundel County Government. 

A $10,000 signing bonus will be awarded to successful candidates. 

•$1,000 will be payable upon hire. 
•$4,000 will be payable upon the successful completion of one (1) year of service as an Anne Arundel Deputy Sheriff. 
•$5,000 will be payable upon the successful completion of two (2) years of service as an Anne Arundel County Deputy Sheriff. 
•The Entry Deputy Sheriff is required to work twelve (12) full months after receipt of the final bonus payment. If an Entry Deputy Sheriff leaves within those twelve (12) months, they will have to repay a prorated portion of the sign on bonus. 

This is responsible law enforcement regulatory work that includes but is not limited to serving arrest warrants, civil and criminal documents, maintaining courtroom decorum, safety and security, transporting and maintaining security and custody of prisoners, and extraditing individuals as required by court orders. 

NATURE AND VARIETY OF WORK

Employees in this class are expected to perform their assigned duties with minimum supervision at the conclusion of the probationary period. Work is performed under the general supervision of a higher level Deputy Sheriff II. Work assignments are carried out in accordance with State law, Arundel County Sheriff's Office policies and procedures, functional precedents, established practices, and defined rules. Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission regulations require applicants to meet and maintain the commission's selection standards for certification, to complete law enforcement academy training within twelve months of provisional certification or the commission's applicable training standards for re-certification of formerly certified law enforcement officers, and to meet and maintain applicable firearms standards set forth by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission. The work of this class may be performed in all types of weather conditions and environments. The work involves standing, sitting, walking and driving for prolonged periods of time. Work hazards include but are not limited to serving civil process papers on citizens who are hostile and occasionally combative; guarding prisoners and responding to prisoner escape from courthouse detainment or during extradition; and, infrequently directing traffic or enforcing traffic violations when encountered during regular duty assignments. Work assignments may include shift work, evenings, weekends and holidays. Employees may be required to work overtime.(Note: The duties and responsibilities enumerated in this class specification are for the purpose of determining a common set of minimum qualifications and salary level for all positions in this class. They are not intended to include all of the essential job functions of all positions in the class). 

Provides order and security in the courthouse and courtrooms to include general search and surveillance, preserving order during court session, maintains security and custody of persons brought before the court, and persons detained in holding cells or lock up facilities. Transports prisoners to and from courts, correctional facilities, hospitals, or other institutions and facilities. Serves civil and criminal process papers to include but not limited to summons, subpoenas, civil and criminal citations/warrants, and writs (execution/possession). Levies and seizes property on judgments; arranges for the sale of seized property as ordered by the court. Serves arrest warrants and judgments; makes arrests on criminal bench warrants and civil body attachments. Provides accurate, complete and concise testimony in courts of law in a professional manner and in appearance as a representative of the Anne Arundel County Sheriff's Office. Provides court ordered protection of persons for various public and private assignments. Safely operate a county radio equipped vehicle. Writes clear and factual written reports. Performs traffic control enforcement. Issues warnings and citations for moving violations. Serves, in some instances, as 1) a back-up responder to assist Anne Arundel County Police units, 2) a first responder to an on-view situation, circumstance or condition requiring law enforcement intervention, or 3) an assistant to other local, state or federal law enforcement agencies as may be necessary in highly stressful and potentially dangerous or hostile situations. Performs other related duties. 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES 

Knowledge of applicable Federal, state and local laws and regulations. Knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, procedures and policies of the Anne Arundel County Sheriff's Office. Ability to proficiently operate a two-way radio. Ability to obtain and maintain proficiency in the use of standard handgun firearms, and related defensive weapons and equipment as required by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission. Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle. Ability to communicate effectively and tactfully with others. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Ability to appropriately respond to hostile or combative persons, and situations. Ability to apply law enforcement principles, practices, methods, techniques, rules and regulations. Ability to respond appropriately in a variety of law enforcement situations requiring the application of State and local laws, rules, procedures, policies and sound judgment.Graduation from high school; two (2) or more years of general work experience; a minimum age of 21 at the time of appointment; and a valid non-commercial Class C motor vehicle operator's license. NOTE: Candidates must be 21 years of age or older to be eligible for provisional certification; and may attend an academy. NOTE: Must be either a US Citizen or Permanent legal resident of the United States who: Is an honorably discharged veteran of the United States Armed Forces; and Has submitted an application for US Citizenship that is pending approval. NOTE: Employees in this position are subject to Controlled Dangerous Substance (CDS) and Alcohol testing. Once the announcement closes, applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be emailed instructions and information on how to take the online entry level DEPUTY SHERIFF exam.

**Applicants are required to pass both the online entry level police officer exam and physical agility test to move forward in the process. **

Unlike the physical agility test, you can only attempt the online entry level Deputy Exam once during this recruitment.

Online entry level deputy sheriff exam dates are tentatively scheduled for February 22, 2025, through March 8, 2025.

The online entry level deputy sheriff exam is online (remote). Applicants that meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to take the online exam. The vendor will email qualified applicants’ instructions on how to take the online exam, and a link to take the exam.

PLEASE NOTE: The entry-level Deputy Sheriff exam is now being administered online.  All applicants will be required to take this test. Previous test scores are no longer valid.


TIME LIMITS

You will be given 3 hours to take the exam.

In order to take the test, you need the following:

·  A private workspace with no one else present

·  A strong internet connection

·  A working computer/laptop

·  An updated browser (Google Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft)

·  A working web camera

·  Your current driver’s license

You CANNOT take the exam on a cell phone or tablet. They are not supported by the testing platform. You must take the exam on a computer or laptop.

You must bring your current driver's license. Applicants that do not bring their current driver's license, regardless of reason, may not be permitted to take the online exam.

PHYSICAL AGILITY TEST:

Applicants are required to pass the physical agility test to move forward in the process. Applicants may take the physical agility both times it's offered. The physical agility test is being administered at the below location on the following dates:

DATES:

Saturday, March 1 , 2025 - Sessions will start at 9am and 10am

Tuesday, March 4 , 2025 - Sessions will start at 5pm and 6pm

A government-issued identification and signed Physical Agility Medical and Legal Waivers must be presented at the test site in order to participate in the physical agility. NOTE: You will be expected to complete a sit up test, push up test and a one and a half (1.5) mile run. Please consider the weather when preparing for the test. Dress appropriately and comfortably to participate in the physical agility test. You should bring water with you to the test site. Applicants are eligible to take the Physical Agility Test both times it's offered.
