This posting will be used to fill Full Time, Permanent, Represented, Safety Sensitive, Maintenance Worker II positions in the Department of Public Works, Waste Management Services Division.
This position involves manual labor in the performance of unskilled and limited semi-skilled tasks of a physically demanding nature. Work involves performance of manual tasks of more than ordinary difficulty requiring some skills or special knowledge acquired through on-the-job training or experience. Work may also include serving as lead worker for a small number of workers of a lower or equal grade and supervisory responsibilities in the absence of the supervisor. Work is performed with some independence under the supervision of a superior who assigns work and makes frequent inspections to ensure proper performance of work.
Examples of Duties and Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Performs labor of a general nature such as shoveling, cleaning facilities and equipment, maintaining buildings and grounds and performs other similar duties. Guides, directs and assists customers in the safe disposal and recycling of solid waste in accordance with established policy, procedures and guidelines. Inspects contents of customer's vehicles both before and after loading to ensure acceptability of solid waste. Directs traffic in and out of the recycling center, landfill and recycling areas. Operates and maintains various equipment such as compactor units, utility carts, and related equipment. Operates equipment to include backhoes, forklifts, loaders, bulk metal truck, utility cart van, and skid steers. Operates light truck pulling a single axle trailer. Performs residential delivery, repair and replacement of recycling carts throughout the County. Performs warehouse duties, including receipt, storage, loading, cleaning and repair of recycling cart inventory. Performs scheduled and emergency overtime work.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of the operation and use of power tools/equipment and light-to-medium duty automotive equipment such as roll-off truck, light truck, backhoe and loader. Skill in the operation of related power tools. Ability to work overtime. Knowledge of the manual tasks and other characteristics involved in work assignments. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods and under unfavorable weather conditions. Ability to provide good customer service. Effective communication skills. Route out the deliveries and repair request for the cart maintenance program. Knowledge of reading a map or similar mapping programs to map daily delivery routeSufficient education to understand and follow oral and written instructions; one (1) or more years’ experience providing familiarity with work performed in Public Works, Waste Management Services to include operating loaders, roll-off trucks and/or light trucks and performing manual labor work; and, possession of a valid commercial Class B motor vehicle operator's license issued by the State or the ability to obtain within six (6) months.
NOTE: Applicants must possess, at minimum, a valid Non-Provisional Class C motor vehicle operator's license. Successful candidates will be required to obtain a Medical Certificate as mandated by Federal law for a CDL Learner's Permit. A CDL Learner's Permit must be obtained within 45 days of the hire to allow for adequate CDL training. Successful candidates must obtain a Class B CDL within six (6) months of hire. NOTE: This position is Safety Sensitive and employees in this position are subject to Controlled Dangerous Substance (CDS) and Alcohol testing. NOTE: Longevity pay is available based on years of service.Preference will be given to candidates with the following:
1. Experience and proficiency operating loaders, backhoe, roll-off trucks and/or light trucks such as bulk metal truck, utility cart van, and light truck with single axle trailer.
2. Experience and proficiency operating power tools.
3. Possession of a Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
