What are the responsibilities and job description for the Permit Specialist (Planning Technician II) position at Anne Arundel County?
The Department of Inspections and Permits strives to provide the citizens of Anne Arundel County with the highest inspection standards that are consistent with adopted codes and regulations. This is accomplished through the consistent and equitable application of regulations in the built and natural environment. It is done through plan review, inspections, enforcement, and the issuance of permits and licenses.
The Permit Center takes in all building, grading, and trade permits and all subdivision applications.
NATURE AND VARIETY OF WORK
Work involves responsibility for the orderly and timely processing and issuance of new and revised commercial and residential grading, building, and trade permit applications. Work involves assisting customers understand permitting requirements and assessing/collecting required application fees. Work involves frequent contact with the general public, property owners, contractors, engineers, architects, and County agencies.

- Accept, review, distribute, and enter computerized records of permit applications.
- Identify and assign required reviewers, process financial transactions, and issue permits.
- Assist Permit Processors with processing permit applications and implementing procedural changes.
- Provide information to the general public, property owners, consultants, and County agencies on the procedures for submitting permit applications and calculating permit fees.
- Review residential site plans for setback requirements.
- Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of the permit application process and forms;
- Knowledge of zoning classifications and setback requirements;
- Strong customer service skills;
- Ability to read and interpret site plans, architectural plans, and associated construction documents;
- Strong data entry background;
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to write and speak effectively and convey permitting requirements.
- Ability to maintain effective work relationships with the public.
Experience: Two (2) or more years of experience in planning, subdivision control, and zoning enforcement work; and a valid non-commercial Class C motor vehicle operator's license.
Note: This position is "Safety Sensitive". This means employees in this position are subject to Controlled Dangerous Substance (CDS) and Alcohol testing.
Preference will be given to candidates with the following:
Experience with the permit process.
Experience in reading site plans.
Experience in reviewing residential site plans for setback requirements.
Knowledge of zoning classifications and setback requirements.
Experience in dealing directly with the public in a very fast-paced environment.
Experience in reading architectural plans.
