This posting will be used to fill a Full Time, Permanent, Safety Sensitive, Roads Maintenance Supervisor position within Arundel County Government Department of Public Works.
The Roads Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for supervisory work on roads, roadways, and drains maintenance, repair, and limited construction activities of public works and related facilities.
NATURE AND VARIETY OF WORK
Work involves responsibility for planning and laying out work and assigning tasks to crews and workers engaged in a wide variety of maintenance, repair, and limited construction activities. Work is received in the form of special assignments from a superior as a result of complaints, work orders, inspections, or general improvement programs. Employees instruct workers and subordinate supervisors in work methods and procedures and inspect work in progress and upon completion. Work is reviewed through conferences and reports and is subject to inspection by a technical or administrative superior. Work also involves supervising the mechanical repair and maintenance of a variety of automotive equipment including passenger cars, trucks, tractors, and related standard and specialized equipment at the district level in the Roads Operation Division.(Note: The duties and responsibilities enumerated in this class specification are for the purpose of determining a common set of minimum qualifications and salary levels for all positions in this class. Supervises directly or through subordinate foreman a large-sized crew or several smaller crews engaged in the maintenance, repair, and limited construction of roads, storm drains, and related facilities; supervises the snow and ice control resurfacing or roads and the seal coating of roads; acts as yard foreman.
Supervises directly or through subordinate foremen several crews engaged in the installation, maintenance, and repair of traffic signs, the striping and marking of roads, the production of road signs, and the placement and repair of traffic counters.
Supervises the bulk pick-up program at a landfill operation.
Lays out, schedules, and assigns work to subordinates; trains and assists subordinates as required; prepares and maintains necessary records and reports.
Performs related work as required.
POSITIONS IN THIS CLASS OF WORK ARE REQUIRED TO LIFT OR CAUSE TO BE LIFTED, TOOLS, MACHINERY OR EQUIPMENT WEIGHING UP TO 1,500 POUNDS.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Thorough knowledge of the materials, methods, techniques, and equipment commonly used in roads, roadways, and drains maintenance, repair, and limited construction activities.
Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices applied in the safe and efficient use of tools and equipment of the area of assignment, and of the safety precautions applicable to the work.
Ability to lay out and supervise the work of a large group of equipment operators and general laboring employees performing various routine to complex roadways maintenance, repair, and limited construction tasks in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale.
Ability to maintain effective public service with a minimum of interruption to public convenience.
Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions, grade and line stakes, and engineering drawings.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, subordinates, other employees, and the public.
Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
Ability to lift up to 75 pounds.Education: Graduation from high school or vocational school.
Experience: Four (4) or more years of experience in maintenance, repair, and limited construction work in public works, including two (2) or more years of supervisory experience; a valid non-commercial Class C motor vehicle operator's license; and as determined by area of assignment, a valid commercial Class B motor vehicle operator's license.
NOTE: This position is Safety-Sensitive and employees in the position are subject to Controlled Dangerous Substance (CDS) and Alcohol testing.Preference will be given to candidates with the following:
1. Experience in maintenance, repair, and limited construction of roads, storm drains, and related facilities.
