This position announcement will be used to fill a Full-Time, Permanent, Represented, Safety-Sensitive Solid Waste Collection Inspector vacancy within the Waste Management Division of the Department of Public Works.
This is responsible solid waste collection inspection work on designated waste collection routes, evaluating contractor performance in relation to regulations and standards, explaining requirements to contractors, and investigating service complaints.

NATURE AND VARIETY OF WORK
Work involves responsibility for inspecting the activities of contract solid waste collection crews on assigned routes.
Work performed by contractors is evaluated by supervisors for adherence to standards.(Note: The duties and responsibilities enumerated in this class specification are for the purpose of determining a common set of minimum qualifications and salary level for all positions in this class. They are not intended to include all of the essential functions of all positions in the class.)
Receives and investigates customer complaints concerning missed collections and related matters; submits report to supervisor; writes monthly contractor performance reports citing number and types of problems and complaints.
Reviews fee assessment records, conducts investigations to assure that proper fees are being charged to customers, and notifies Tax Assessment Office and Data Processing to adjust customer billings accordingly.
Assists in determining waste collection routes; investigates dumpster unit locations for community clean-ups; receives and dispatches calls by two-way radio.
Prepares and maintains necessary records and reports.
Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of the laws, ordinances, rules, and regulations relevant to solid waste storage, collection, and disposal.
Knowledge of the physical aspects of the County including names and locations of primary and secondary roads.
Ability to inspect the solid waste collection activities of contractors and collection crews.
Ability to investigate and handle customer complaints regarding waste collection.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, contractors, and the public.
Ability to prepare and read waste collection maps.
Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.Graduation from high school; two (2) or more years experience in work involving solid waste collection and public contact; and a valid non-commercial Class C motor vehicle operator's license. NOTE: This is a Safety Sensitive position and employees in this position are subject to Controlled Dangerous Substance (CDS) and Alcohol testing. NOTE: Longevity pay is available based on years of service.Preference will be given to applicants who possess the following: 1. Knowledge and/or experience of Waste Management and Recycling Curbside Collection Services. 2. Experience providing superior customer service and maintaining positive customer relations. 3. Proficiency using Microsoft Word, Excel, and/or Access. 4. Six (6) or more months experience as a lead worker or team leader/supervisor.
