This posting will be used to fill full-time, permanent, Safety Sensitive, Utilities Support Worker I positions in Utility Operations, Department of Public Works. This is entry-level work performing manual labor and assisting semi-skilled workers in the repair and maintenance of wastewater distribution and collections systems.
NATURE AND VARIETY OF WORK
An employee in this class normally works as part of a crew performing various repairs and maintenance tasks. The complexity of work involves cutting and installing sewer pipes that are damaged or broken; safely operating motor vehicles and equipment; and testing, repairing, and maintaining components of the wastewater distribution and collections system. Instruction and training is provided by the supervisor or appropriate staff.
Personal contacts include working with other County employees and responding to public inquiries on the nature and purpose of the work being performed. The work is physical requiring the lifting of heavy pipes, operating equipment, and working in trenches. The work is hazardous by having to work in confined spaces and being exposed to contagious diseases. An employee works in all types of weather conditions and must be able to respond to work emergencies outside of the scheduled work hours. Work performance is reviewed and evaluated by a supervisor.(Note: The duties and responsibilities enumerated in this class specification are for the purpose of determining a common set of minimum qualifications and salary level for all positions in this class. Performs manual labor in the repair and maintenance of wastewater systems by manually digging and backfilling trenches.
Constructs shoring, lays sewer pipes, cuts pipes to specific measurements, and connects replacement pipes with specialized clamps and couplings as instructed.
Receives instruction and learns to drive a dump truck with a trailer that is used for hauling a backhoe, and how to operate a front-end loader.
Operates a variety of power equipment and hand tools to include chain saws, pipe saws, jackhammers, picks, shovel, and rakes in a safe manner as instructed.
Receives instructions on the repair and maintenance of gravity and pressure mains and connections, grinder pumps, septic tanks, and pumping stations.
Operates various types of sewer cleaning equipment; checks manholes, patches holes, and repairs construction area; cleans main sewer lines, wet wells, and receives instruction on how the rodder truck is employed in cleaning mains with rods, cutters and spears.
Operates valve testing equipment, exercises valves, and conduct tests to determine proper operating condition as instructed and trained.
Operates vehicles and equipment during snow removal operations.
Performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Some knowledge of repair, maintenance and construction work.
Ability to learn the skills required in the repair and maintenance of wastewater distribution and collections systems.
Ability to learn how to prepare trenches in accordance with safety regulations and construction standards.
Ability to acquire knowledge in the operation of vehicles, power equipment, tools, and testing devices used to operate wastewater facilities and structures.
Ability to learn how to read blueprints and schematics.
Ability to use a computer and apply relevant software applications.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to lift heavy objects and materials.
Ability to safely operate motor vehicles and equipment.
Ability to acquire a commercial driver's license (CDL) within six (6) months of selection.
Ability to work in hazardous conditions.
Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods under adverse weather conditions.Graduation from high school; six (6) or more months experience in repair, maintenance, and construction work; and a valid non-commercial Class C motor vehicle operator's license.
NOTE: This position requires a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with tanker endorsement. Therefore, candidates will be required to obtain a CDL with tanker endorsement within six (6) months of employment. NOTE: Longevity pay is available based on years of service.
NOTE: This position is Safety Sensitive and employees in this position are subject to Controlled Dangerous Substance and Alcohol testing.Preference will be given to candidates who possess the following: 1.) Possession of a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with tanker endorsement. 2.) Experience with the operation of a combination jet/vacuum truck. 3.) Knowledge and/or experience in the maintenance, repair and testing of wastewater system components.
