Position Description
At the Anoka County Highway Department, it is our vision to enhance and protect life by providing safe roads and eliminating traffic congestion. The department has an immediate opening for a Seasonal Sign Technician who will perform various duties. Some of the critical responsibilities of this position include assisting in the operation of installing and maintaining various types of traffic control devices in a neat, orderly, and productive fashion. Assist in the installation of traffic control signage and devices.
This is a seasonal, non-exempt, on-site position. Interviews will take place as applications are received for those selected to move forward in the hiring process.

  • This position will work at the Anoka County Highway building located at 1440 Bunker Lake Blvd NW, Andover MN 55304.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
These examples are not all-inclusive and are intended to be illustrative of the primary responsibilities of an Anoka County Seasonal Sign Technician.
  • Assist in the operation of installing and maintaining various types of traffic control devices in a neat, orderly, and productive fashion. Assist in the installation of traffic control signage and devices.
  • Support seasonal painting and grinding operations.
  • Fabricate signs and traffic control devices in accordance with Manual Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and Standard Signs Manual, utilizing Flexi Sign Software, computerized sign cutters, solvent based printers, and silk-screening equipment, and create correctly sized aluminum sign blanks using tools such as aluminum shears, radius cutters, and band saws.
  • Follow MUTCD and department standards and procedures when performing signage, painting, and grinding operations on the County Highway System, including using proper PPE and following safety procedures to ensure a safe and efficient work area.
  • Assist with maintenance of sign vehicles through daily vehicles inspections, conducting basic routine maintenance such as checking oil and filling fluids, and notifying Fleet Services and/or supervisor when vehicles need more extensive service.
  • Perform daily cleaning and maintenance on all paint spraying equipment.
  • Use computerized system to call for underground locates prior to installing new signs.
Qualifications and Requirements:
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed
  • Requires a high school diploma.
  • Must have a valid Minnesota driver's license.
  • Successfully pass a criminal and driver’s license background check.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed
  • Experience using basic hand tools and basic maintenance of vehicles.
  • Experience working on high volume traffic worksites in a safe manner.
Physical Demands and Work Conditions
  • Indoor and outdoor county work sites, including construction sites near high-speed/high-volume traffic, in all weather conditions.
  • Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus, such as to work on computers. Ability to see colors, shades and brightness.
  • Hearing abilities required for general and phone communication, signals, and machine sounds.
  • Ability to detect, discern, and tolerate a wide range of scents required for safety and performance of essential duties.
  • Cognitive abilities required include problem solving, prioritization of tasks, short- and long-term memory, interpreting and understanding written documents, and general mathematical skills.
  • Assignments require several hours of varied physical activity including repeated bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, pushing, pulling, walking on sloped or uneven terrain, and handling/carrying equipment and materials.
  • Regular lifting of 20-50 lbs., occasional lifting of up to 100 lbs.
  • Equipment used includes computers, phones, and standard office equipment in addition to Construction equipment depending on assignment.
  • Construction equipment may include but is not limited to hand and power tools, heavy equipment, painting/striping equipment, hydraulic post pullers, shovels, rakes, air compressors, cement mixers, chain saws, picks, sanders, ice steamers, brush chippers, curbing machines, overhead personal lift vehicles, electronic test equipment, high temperature materials (asphalt, bituminous oil, and crack-filler), weather appropriate gear, and personal protective equipment.
  • Travel between work sites may require driving a county vehicle and/or a personal vehicle.
  • Exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, electrical shock, fumes, airborne particles, prolonged vibration from machinery, and other hazards is possible while performing essential duties.

Anoka County has determined that successfully passing a pre-employment criminal/driving background check, drug screen and DOT physical, and/or other qualifications checks may be necessary for certain positions. Applicants may be required to sign an informed consent form allowing the County to obtain to conduct such screenings and/or verify their qualifications in connection with the position sought. Applicants who do not sign the informed consent form will not be further considered for the position.
As required by federal law, Anoka County must conduct a query of driving records in the FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse as part of the pre-employment process for CDL drivers (§382.701 Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse.). While Clearinghouse registration is not required, you will need to be registered to provide electronic consent for Anoka County to run a full query of your driving record in the Clearinghouse.
