JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE : Animal Advancement Specialist

DEPARTMENT : Operations

REPORTS TO : Animal Advancement Managers

STATUS : Non-Exempt

GENERAL SUMMARY

Under the direct supervision of Animal Advancement Managers, the Animal Advancement Specialist is responsible for maintaining best care through healthy, sanitary, safe and comfortable conditions for animals in the shelter in accordance with best practices and protocols. Animal Advancement Specialists will also be responsible for behavior and enrichment for all shelter animals in an effort to reduce stress, fear, and anxiety during their stay at the shelter.

Animal Advancement operates on a tier system. As you acquire the knowledge and skills of each tier, you will advance to the next level for training and increased pay.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Tier 1 :

  • Uphold the PETS Work Culture Agreement through Praise, Engagement, Trust and Support.
  • Support the Fear Free Shelter practices.
  • Perform simple grooming tasks.
  • Understanding and implementing infectious disease cleaning protocols by cleaning and disinfecting all housing and holding areas according to established guidelines in the required time periods to reduce disease transmission.
  • Provide daily essential care for all shelter animals including; feeding, watering, monitoring health, and cleaning. Exercise caution when handling animals and seek help when necessary.
  • Provide essential daily enrichment, exercise and behavior care to animals in accordance with guidelines and protocols.
  • Properly communicate all issues regarding health and behavior of shelter animals to management.
  • Ability to follow protocols accurately and consistently.
  • Ensure that all animals are safe and secure when cleaning is finished.
  • Foster a friendly and welcoming environment to all volunteers, guests, and staff.
  • Provide comprehensive training and mentorship to incoming staff members and volunteers.
  • Respect the physical plant and equipment; report all building, caging and environmental problems to a management or maintenance staff member as soon as possible.
  • Ensure that all equipment is in good repair, adequately stocked and kept neatly in its appropriate place. Stocking can be accomplished using wheeled carts.
  • Must respect animals and believe in Anti-Cruelty‘s mission and philosophy.
  • Attend all scheduled meetings on and offsite.
  • Assume other duties as assigned.

Tier 2 :

  • Perform Behavior Assessments on new arrivals
  • Write Behavior Treatment plans for any applicable animals
  • Assist Veterinarians with Physical Exams utilizing Fear Free restraint methods
  • Conduct Behavior Rounds
  • Lead and manage playgroup
  • Select appropriate match categories for each animal that is available for adoption
  • Lead dog and cat classes
  • Tier 3 :

  • Provide data entry and administrative support on special and ongoing projects
  • Provide behavioral and logistical foster support
  • Provide Field Service support; including data entry, client calls and scheduling, feral cat trapping projects, and general community support.
  • Co-coordinate incoming transports; including correspondence, scheduling, data entry, and coordination of staff.
  • Provide clinic & intake support when necessary.

  • Ability to work independently and efficiently with minimal supervision
  • Works effectively in a team environment

  • Ability to multitask while providing quality care in a fast paced and high-volume setting
  • Effective communication skills
  • Maintains a neat and professional appearance
  • Compassion and empathy for both animals and owners
  • Passion for animals
  • Comfortable in handling animals and the potential risk they pose
  • Ability to remain calm in a busy or stressful situation.
  • EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Minimum of 1 year of previous experience in an animal related field
  • Note : a comparable combination of education, experience or training that would provide a level of knowledge, skills, and ability may qualify individuals.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to work in all weather conditions
  • Ability to handle work around companion animals
  • Ability to remain on feet for long periods of time
  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds
  • Ability to frequently bend, stoop and reach
