Employee for a management position responsible for the repair, maintenance and modifications of vessels and equipment or facilities assigned to a specific region or operating company.
This includes the development of budgets and schedules, contractor selection, contract management and interfacing with regulatory agencies. Position assists in the development and adherence of the maintenance and repair budgets, as well as controls expenditures within limitations of a designated project's budget. May prepare and present status reports to customer, project team and management.
Supervises the timely and cost-effective maintenance, repair, modification, and refurbishment projects of the existing fleet or facilities. Develops specifications and vendor bid packages and evaluates bid packages. Monitors the contractors and / or shipyards during projects. Conducts on-site surveys to determine maintenance and repair needs.
Hands on experience with the ability to troubleshoot and make repairs to ships operating systems such as main engine, propulsion, generators, hydraulics, pumps electronic controls and electrical systems is preferred. Must be a safety minded self-starter, able to work independently and as part of a team with crew members. Candidate must take pride in craftsmanship and manage their fleet to our high company standards and policies.
Key Responsibilities
The Port Engineer will be responsible for the supervision and leadership of all technical aspects of vessel management.
Main tasks will include :
Maintenance & Repair of a 3 vessel fleet.
Day to day management and efficient running of the technical function.
Provide supervision and technical support for over 20 sea staff.
Oversee the crew in the repair, maintenance, and operation of all machinery and equipment on the vessels.
Ensure implementation and execution of planned maintenance and quality systems.
Claims handling and insurance co-ordination.
Key driver of planning and execution for dry dockings and other repair projects.
Coordination and planning for all Class and Flag State Surveys, including relationship management with Lloyd`s and any other relevant class society.
Management of ad-hoc technical issues.
Overall responsible for purchasing, including vendor selection & cost control.
Other job duties as assigned.
The ideal candidate will be an industry leader on the technical management of vessels, with strong experience in the maritime / terminal industry and looking to advance their career in a fast-growing environment.
Qualification and experience :
Marine Technical background with relevant higher education.
Prior seafaring experience in capacity of engineer officer strongly preferred.
Knowledge of vessel machinery.
Knowledge of applicable legislation / standards (class societies, regulations, etc).
Excellent written and spoken English & Spanish.
Solid computer skills.
Required Experience
Minimum 5 years' experience in marine engineering, with sailing as a chief engineer in the tug and barge industry preferred. Must possess skill sets and demonstrate proven experience developing, improving and streamlining processes to meet established goals and objectives. Requires the ability to effectively manage projects that may vary in nature and scope.
Knowledge of Stork-Wartsilla, Cummings, Scania, Man B&W, Caterpillar, Z-Drive and Voith systems are desirable. Moderate PC computer operating skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Outlook and Word, and the ability to learn NS5 are required.
Required Education
Bachelors degree in engineering or at least 10 years in an engineering related field. Licensed engineer.
Working Conditions
Works outside in conditions of both hot and cold temperatures as well as inside in an office environment. Must be able to crouch and stoop to get into areas with restricted headroom, to climb ladders and to lift and carry 50-75 lbs. Exposed to odors, dust, dirt, mechanical hazards, high noise levels and potentially hazardous equipment. May involve travel to multiple locations and extended stays out of home location. Long hours, short notice travel, weekend duties and 24-hour on-call status essential job requirements. Must comply with all work rules, including those that pertain to safety and health.
