The Deckhand is responsible for assisting in the safe operation, maintenance, and upkeep of the tugboat and its equipment. The role requires physical endurance, teamwork, and adherence to safety protocols while performing various deck operations, including line handling, cargo operations, and vessel maintenance.

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

1. Line Handling & Mooring Operations:

  • Handle mooring and tow lines during docking, undocking, and towing operations.
  • Secure vessels in accordance with safety protocols.
  • Assist in making up and breaking tows.

2. Vessel Maintenance & Housekeeping:

  • Perform routine cleaning and maintenance of the deck, hull, and superstructure.
  • Conduct painting, rust removal, and lubrication of equipment.
  • Assist with general repairs as directed by the captain or Mechanic.

3. Safety & Compliance:

  • Follow all maritime safety regulations and company policies.
  • Participate in safety drills, emergency procedures, and training exercises.
  • Ensure proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

4. Cargo Handling & Support:

  • Assist with loading and unloading parts, supplies, tugs materials as required.
  • Operate deck and engine machinery under supervision.

5. Watchkeeping & Navigation Support:

  • Stand watch as assigned and report any irregularities.
  • Assist with monitoring navigational signals, buoys, and other vessels.
  • Inspect and the and be ready to changes mooring line during the towing.

6. Communication & Teamwork:

  • Work closely with the captain, mechanic, company supervisor, contractor and other crew members to ensure smooth operations.
  • Report any issues or hazards promptly to the senior crew.

 

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Previous maritime or deckhand experience preferred but not required.
  • Ability to lift heavy equipment and perform physically demanding tasks.
  • Basic knowledge of vessel operations and maintenance.
  • Willingness to work long hours, including nights and weekends.
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills.
  • Valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) or possibility to obtain.
  • Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) with necessary endorsements (preferred).
  • Basic Safety training : Firs Aid, Fire Prevention and Firefighting, Survival at Sea, CPR/First Aid Certification (preferred).

 

Work Conditions:

  • Work in various weather conditions, including extreme temperatures.
  • Extended periods away from home depending on shift schedules.
  • Potential exposure to hazardous conditions, requiring strict adherence to safety protocols.

 

This position offers a great opportunity to gain experience in the maritime industry, with potential career advancement to higher deck positions such as Mate or Captain.
