What are the responsibilities and job description for the Marine Officer position at Antrim County?
GENERAL PURPOSE
Under the direct supervision of the Sheriff, the Marine Officer is seasonal, part-time within the Sheriff
Department. A Marine Officer is responsible for the safe operation of one of several marine patrol boats,
answering complaints, and providing educational as well as enforcement information to the general
public; other related work as required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Search and Rescue Operations – Many times, an officer receives complaints regarding lost or
overdue boaters. Marine Officers will obtain the necessary information and relay that information
to Antrim County Central Dispatch. Appropriate equipment will be dispatched at that time. The
U.S. Coast Guard may be contacted to aid in the search.
2. Water Safety Education – To schedule classes for boater safety school and promote water safety
throughout the boating season.
3. Livery Inspections – To perform livery inspections on a business for the purpose of renting,
leasing, or chartering boats.
4. Recovery of drowned bodies – Make every attempt to recover bodies of individuals who have
drowned.
5. Marine Law Enforcement – The Marine Officer will enforce Public Act 303 to the best of his/her
ability using the training and guidelines set forth by the Department and the Act itself.
6. Other duties as assigned by the Sheriff or designee.
DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
1. High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
2. Must be 18 years of age or older.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
1. Must have excellent communication skills.
2. Thorough knowledge and understanding of the laws of the State of Michigan, county, and local
ordinances.
3. Knowledge of Public Act 303 (Marine Safety Act) and administrative rules within their jurisdiction.
4. Experience operating and trailering a boat.
5. Must hold a boater’s safety certificate.
6. Must have a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
7. Willingness to work an assigned 8 hour workday.
8. Must possess a valid Michigan Driver’s License.
9. Required to deal face-to-face with the public, maintaining confidentiality when necessary.
10. Must have a positive attitude, dedication to excellence, and a strong dedication to public service.
11. Must look professional in his/her appearance and become familiar with rules and regulations of
the Department.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
Boat; trailer; truck; hoist; life vests; ticketing paperwork; computer; multi-line phone; copying machine;
staplers; pencils; pens; and other equipment normally associated with a marine environment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee

Heavy Work - Exert 50 – 100 pounds of force occasionally, or 25 – 50 pounds of force frequently, or 10 –
20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for
medium work.
Climbing – Ascending or descending ladders, ramps, and the like, using feet and legs, and/or hands and
arms. Body agility is emphasized. Occasionally – Activity exists up to 1/3 of the time.
Stooping- Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist, requiring full use of the
lower extremities and back muscles. Occasionally – Activity exists up to 1/3 of the time.
Crouching – Bending the body downward and forward by bending legs and spine.

Looking/Seeing – Adjustment of lens of eyes to bring an object into sharp focus. This factor is important
when doing near point work at varying distances from the eye (vision corrected to 20/20 using corrective
lenses)
