The Medical Assistant (MA) assists in receiving patients, takes vitals, draws blood (phlebotomist), handles lab telephone calls, and more. This role serves as a liaison between the patients, physicians/providers, and other staff members.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
- Hematology Analyzers: maintenance, service, quality control and quality assurance. This is to include proficiency testing. Running quality control and proficiency testing will be done on a rotating basis to meet CLIA requirements.
- Patient Processing: Greet patients, escort them to lab in a timely manner, perform vitals, venipuncture, therapeutic phlebotomies, perform bleeding times, urinalysis, room assignment, updating patient chart in Electronic Medical Record.
- Specimen testing and processing: collection, analysis (to include performing dilutions on WBC/PLT as required), reporting of critical lab results to appropriate provider/nurse and documenting in EMR, processing specimens to include bagging for reference labs, centrifuging specimens in a timely manner. Bring up CBC machines in the morning and down in the afternoon.
- Perform clinical duties to include asepsis, infection control, first aid and CPR. Keep draw station area stocked, clean, order lab supplies.
- Provider Assistance: assisting providers with patient exams, bone marrow procedures, preparing blood smears, ordering of tests to include add-ons and any other needed tasks. Serve as chaperone to providers.
- Paperwork: documentation of quality control, documentation of patient results (to include manual tests), completion of appropriate paperwork for send out specimens, billing for test performed and preparing schedules for the next workday.
- Autoclave operating, cleaning, care and monthly maintenance. This includes the monthly Autoclave Cleaning Log.
Requirements
*Candidates for this position are required to have a high school diploma or GED equivalent. *
Experience and Education
- Medical Assistant training and/or experience required. Certified or Registered Medical Assistant preferred.
- 1 year phlebotomy experience preferred
- Basic computer knowledge
- Knowledge of medical terminology

- Ability to perform venipunctures, phlebotomies and other procedures as indicated
- Ability to comply with OSHA and HIPAA policies
- Ability to effectively multi-task
